The new display will feature artworks from the Guild of St George’s Ruskin Collection curated by The National Saturday Club, a group of 13-16-year-olds who meet weekly at Millennium Gallery to enjoy creative activities. A new video work by Jake Goodall will be updated regularly throughout the exhibition and will go on display alongside research from the University of Sheffield, highlighting their work towards reversing climate damage by attempting to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Over 75 years ago, the HMT Empire Windrush brought people seeking new opportunities from the Caribbean to fill post-war labour shortages in the UK. These passengers, and other arrivals between 1948 and 1971, helped forge Britain’s future. This new exhibition celebrates the many ways that people of African Caribbean heritage have contributed to Sheffield life. Shaped by community co-curators, displays share inspiring stories of journeys, culture and heritage, from church, sport and carnival to fighting racism and discrimination.

They have power and go far beyond a record of someone’s physical appearance – they offer insights into a sitter’s identity and status, as well as revealing the power dynamic between sitter and artist. They can flatter their subject, be grounded in the reality of the lives of the people they show, or be reminders of our own mortality. The advent of photography further changed the nature of portraiture - not only through its speed and accuracy, but in being a cheaper medium, allowing greater representation of the working classes and everyday society.

Sheffield Museums’ Metalwork Collection is one of the finest in the world. It contains the cutlery, flatware and tableware that have made Sheffield famous, as well as beautiful objects collected from every continent.The Collection comprises of some 13,000 items, thought to be the most extensive grouping of Sheffield-made cutlery, flatware (forks and spoons) and holloware (bowls, teapots, containers) in existence. The Collection was awarded Designated Status by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport in 1999 in recognition of its outstanding national and historical significance.

ArtWorks Togetheris an international festival based in Sheffield offering adult artists who have a learning disability, are autistic, or both, the opportunity to showcase their talents. The festival exhibition features shortlisted works by 70 artists from 21 countries, highlighting the breadth and depth of artistic practice by artists who have a learning disability and autistic artists working internationally today, from South Yorkshire to South Asia.

A major event in the UK’s running calendar, the Sheffield Half Marathon is South Yorkshire’s biggest event of its kind. Thousands of runners of all abilities will be taking part, raising many thousands of pounds for numerous great causes. With a city centre start and finish, a huge crowd of enthusiastic supporters will cheer participants out and back. The event boasts a stunningly scenic route with majestic views of the Peak District on the climb to Ringinglow. The race even incorporates a ‘triple test’ giving entrants a chance to be crowned Peaks Challenge winners in a timed hill climb, triumph in a times 10K downhill sprint section and cross the finish line first to lift the Sheffield Half Marathon title. A vast army of eager and hard-working volunteers also contributes to ensuring that the event lives long in the memory. This really is an event of which the whole of Yorkshire can be proud.
