Artist and activist Vanessa German will be the focal point of a captivating discussion centered around her latest exhibition, The Blue Mother. Held in the Tank, located beneath the iconic Dayton Arcade, this thought-provoking installation showcases a collection of sculptural works that celebrate the human form as a vessel for empowerment and transformation. Vanessa German, recognized as a skilled visual storyteller, employs assemblage and mixed media techniques, integrating locally sourced objects to create her powerful ritualistic structures, commonly referred to as power figures or tar babies. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Congolese Nkisi sculptures and folk art traditions, German adorns these unique creations with intricate beading, glass, fabric, and sculpted wood, resulting in a convergence of Black power, spirituality, mysticism, and feminism. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of quilts crafted by German's mother, Sandra Keat German, an esteemed figure within the quilting community and a profound influence on Vanessa German's artistic journey. Doors open at 6 pm, with the talk commencing at 6:30 pm. The engaging discussion is expected to conclude between 7:30 pm and 8 pm. The galleries will remain open for visitors to explore until 9 pm.
