How do you create a community? The Inspiring Story of Belfast’s First Urban Gaeltacht | Ulster Museum

This exhibition looks at how the group built homes, raised children, founded schools, and established community enterprises. It explores how new communities are formed where none existed, what binds them together, and what is needed for them to grow and flourish. The narrative of the contemporary Irish language revival is above all else a love story, reaffirming the truth of the old Irish proverb: Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine – People live in the shelter of each other.

The McCosh Lecture - Professor Katharine Hayhoe | Queen's University Belfast, Council Chamber and Canada Room, Lanyon Building

Professor Katharine Hayhoe, Chief Scientist, The Nature Conservancy. 'Power, Love, and a Sound Mind: Finding Hope in the Climate Crisis'. Most people around the world are worried about climate change, yet few are doing anything about it. Why the gap? Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe argues that the answer lies not in more data, but in the terrain mapped out by James McCosh more than a century ago: the meeting place of science, faith, and the human mind. Drawing on McCosh's legacy, Hayhoe connects climate science and Christian belief with the latest findings from psychology and neuroscience. The result is an unlikely convergence: it turns out that what the apostle Paul called a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind is exactly what today's research tells us is needed to turn worry into action, and despair into hope. Illustrators North play host to a live talk featuring illustrator Fiona McDonnell for Belfast Design Week. Our conversation will explore Fiona’s career, from commercial illustration to self-initiated projects, looking at how she has built a distinctive visual style and sustained a creative practice across advertising, branding, editorial and heritage work.
