The Ulster Society for Irish Studies (USIHS) and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) cordially invite attendees to the annual 2024 Beckett lecture, honoring the esteemed Professor J. C. Beckett. Set to take place in Belfast at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland on May 9, 2024, this year's lecture will be led by Dr. Clodagh Tait of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Dr. Tait, an expert in early modern Irish social and cultural history, will delve into the captivating realm of women's folklore, exploring the enchanting tales narrated by girls and women about encounters with the supernatural, particularly fairies. These narratives not only shed light on the deep-rooted beliefs and customs surrounding fairies but also offer insights into the communal influences that shaped these stories over generations. By examining these folklore accounts, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of women's experiences, traditions, and perspectives throughout history. Admission to this enlightening lecture, "Margaret Isabella and the fairy in the churn," is free of charge.
