BIO Notable and diverse figures in the Alberta music scene have praised Gillespie’s songwriting. Both Tim Leacock and Aaron Booth described Gillespie’s songs and lyrics as cinematic. Bob Chelmick of CKUA described Gillespie’s song “Wetaskiwin” as a “fine character sketch”. Another song, “Peel From the Birch”, has received ample airplay on CJSW’s esteemed Blues program “At the Crossroads”. Carter Felker calls Gillespie the White Whale for his rare craftmanship (and even rarer live appearances). Amy Nelson named Matt Gillespie and Tom Phillips as her two favourite songwriters in Calgary. Singers often talk about covers (i.e. songs written by someone else) and originals (i.e. songs written by them personally). Matt Gillespie’s originals are not just originals in the conventional sense as described above but are unlike most anything else, despite relying so heavily on history and tradition. To hear a song by Matt Gillespie is to hear something at once familiar and unique. SHOW DETAILS: Doors 5pm Happy hour until 7pm Show starts 8:00pm All ages welcome
