Join the experts for an enlightening discussion on the history of tango at the upcoming event, "THE HISTORY OF TANGO: An Experiential Conversation with Dance Instruction." This event will take place at the prestigious Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

The panelists for this event are renowned in their fields. Teresa Marrero, PhD, a professor at the University of North Texas, will share her extensive research on the history of tango and its significance in Fornés' play. Dr. Marrero's expertise in tango instruction adds depth to her insights. She will delve into the countercultural origins of this dance form and its portrayal of socioeconomic and sexual power struggles in early twentieth-century Argentina.

Choreographer Carlos (CJ) Torres will also be a part of the panel. With training in various dance styles like jazz, contemporary, ballet, and ballroom, CJ brings a unique perspective to the discussion. Having worked with renowned artists like Maluma and Marc Anthony, CJ's experience in the commercial industry and passion for creating captivating performances makes him a valuable addition to the event.

The highlight of the evening will be the performance of Fornés' early play, "TANGO PALACE." A dark, funny, and whimsical exploration of perilous passion, this play pushes the boundaries of love and war. It draws inspiration from Samuel Beckett's absurdism, Oscar Wilde's wit, and a modern camp style. This masterpiece by the late great playwright and Pulitzer nominee, María Irene Fornés, is not to be missed.

To complement the main stage production, Thinking Cap Theatre is offering free public programming. This includes engaging talkbacks with the director, cast, and Fornés and tango scholars. Attendees can also participate in audience tango instruction with the production's choreographer after the performance on Saturday, October 28th, 2023 at 7:30 pm.
