The Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge

If you are on the boat cruise down then stay here (and stay for two nights) in Pak Beng. The room we were in (upper floor of upper section) had the most amazing view. The photo does not do it justice. The rooms have a traditional, wooden Laos style which adds to the feeling this is more than a 3 star. The beds / mattresses are very comfortable and the room was clean and well appointed. The staff / service was excellent. Benoit (the manager) runs a tight ship and is attentive. He knew our names and made us feel welcome which is hard in a short stay hotel. The reason you must stay for two nights is to break up the cruise, enjoy Pak Beng and (most importantly) visit the Elephant Sanctuary. That was a highlight of our entire 3 week tour of Laos. Breaking up the river cruise takes a bit of planning (certain days work, certain others don't) but it's really worth it. There is a little pool at the hotel, which was perfect for us after the Elephant Sanctuary to just chill by. We were still jet lagged and this was a nice way to waste an hour on a hot afternoon. On a side note, the staff are all allowed to grow vegetables on the river front (great soil) and keep / sell the produce. It's actually lovely to see as they keep it so neat.

On the way back to China, there are no good hotels in Mongsai. After staying in the city for one night, Ctrip found this hotel, but the room was intermittent after arriving. I stayed for 6 days today and renewed the room. Good service, good environment, good facilities, catering is OK, it depends on personal taste! Going inside the hotel is Nanjia Waterfall. Hotel guests are free to enter, but you have to play items and go to the waterfall. It is 5 kilometers to the waterfall. You have to spend and take a sightseeing car to enter. Every item is worth playing, except for quad bikes. The price of the car is much cheaper than in China. The waterfall can swim, the park has a swimming pool, and the waterfall also allows swimming. The impression of Laos is that, except for the public officials of the police and customs, almost everyone is friendly. Good breakfast, free parking, extra bed, most suitable for parent-child travel, 25 minutes drive from the city to the hotel, very easy to find.

Like virtually everyone who stops in Pakbeng, I was here strictly as an overnight on a Mekong cruise. The hotel is a bit of absolutely lovely luxury in truly the middle of nowhere (with apologies to Pakbeng). The hotel has transportation ready to go to make the quick trip from your boat to the hotel. Check in is unusually well organized, which is a real blessing, given that a fair number of people arrive at once, who are tired, and want to settle into their room. The rooms are simply lovely. Beautiful wooden floors. Very comfortable beds. Extremely nice bathrooms. The rooms have AC and fans to boot. Everything is extremely clean. Outside each room is a little sitting area with a view of the Mekong and the entire hotel is situated with a spectacular view just above it. I had both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. Dinner is a set course meal that was lovely and fit the ticket perfectly. Very high-quality food but also didn’t take too long after a long day. Breakfast is a very nice buffet. I believe you could also get eggs or pancakes made too. The hotel has a small pool with a great view. Sadly, I didn’t get the chance to use it. I suspect this is common with guests who arrive late on the boat and leave early the next morning. I should mention that the hotel manager is completely on top of everything at this place. He really deserves full marks for making sure everything runs like clockwork, and is truly lovely in a place where I suspected as far from easy to do so. Thank you for a lovely stay.
