Old Pier House

Twice I have been here (last time was 2 years ago). Just as good as I remember. I had booked a twin room which was all they had left at the time (I was going alone). Apparently the room had been double booked so I was switched to a room with a double bed! I didn't complain! Pros: - Very comfy bed - Nice hot shower - Fridge in the room - Plugs are close to the bed so easy to charge your laptop while using it - Nice and clean Breakfast in the morning very nice, plenty of it too. I do have a couple of minor niggles. One is the Wifi kept dropping out during the day but worked better at night. Also the extractor fan comes on whenever you turn the bathroom light on, and stays on for a set time. This wouldnt normally bother me but in my room the fan was really loud and sounded squeaky, so if I used the bathroom in the night i'd have to not turn the light on, or suffer the noise for several minutes after. Minor issues though, would recommend this place to anyone. Close to the sea too.

From arrival to departure, was a pleasure t o be there. The whole place, from communal area to bedrooms was decorated to a very high standard. Everywhere was spotless and the whole building smelled clean and fresh. My friend and I were made to feel very welcome on arrival. The room was well equipped and the beds were really comfy. Breakfast was plentiful and the 'Full English' was cooked to perfection!! I have already recommended to friends and if ever I need to stay in Plymouth again, I will be sure to return to Cassandra Guest House. Excellent all round. All the best and thank you - Michelle

We stayed here for a short two night break and found everything to be very good. We were in Torbay suite, a very large room with a seaview and a large bathroom, bath and shower separate. We were informed there was no breakfast but there is a nearby Hotel which did excellent breakfasts at a reasonable cost. The Hotel is a reasonable walk into town and we are oldies, so great location for the younger set. Sauna and Pool were. open and working well. Comfortable bed, clean bedroom and pleasant staff. Only drawback no bar or restaurant so no evening get together spot, but you are welcome to take in your own drinks, we took in two bottles of wine and staff lent us two wine glasses from the now closed bar. All in all a great place for a short break with plenty of nearby eating places so plenty of variety.

Me and my friend stayed here in June , was looking forward to staying but wished we hadn’t . We arrived and found a parking spot round the back which was fine . The outside gardens are lovely but the hole building looked like it needed a complete refurb outside and in . Very dated everywhere . We liked the spa area that was ok and the outdoor pool . Our room was awful , we stayed in a twin room . There was holes in the bedsheets , loads of stains on the carpet . Dusty and dirty . The bathroom floor creaked badly and there was no proper shower just a mixer tap over the bath that didn’t work very well and you couldn’t adjust the temperature as the cold tap didn’t work . The doors to go out to the balcony didn’t shut properly and were warped so you had to slam it shut . They were dirty and badly needed replacing . We were unknown to us next door to a family living at the hotel and they started hoovering at 10.45pm waking us up and being nosey through the night , nothing was done by reception. Breakfast would have been ok but I nearly broke my tooth on a stone they blamed it on the mushrooms ! No apologies after complaining to reception , got told management would phone me but they didn’t . If you want a tatty dirty hotel then stay here if you don’t then stay well away as they don’t do anything about complaints no compensation, no communication at all !

Stayed here for 4 nights in August with my husband as part of our break away. Will start with the positives first - room nice and clean, breakfasts really nice and lots to pick from, parking included and free access to the grounds. Now for the negatives - wedding on whilst we were there which consisted of a lot of noise until midnight on our last night which wasn’t ideal with a 6hr drive home the next morning. I completely appreciate a wedding being there as the place has lovely surroundings however we weren’t made aware of this when we booked and had we known we would have booked somewhere else as it was like a nightclub. Another massive issue was the guests staying in the same wing as us especially those in the room above ours. Constant banging of doors all day and night resulting in every night having broken sleep which was really frustrating. Did bring this up with the bar manager on our 3rd night as he was moving another guest at 10.30pm to a new room due to issues with theirs. The following morning the manager of the hotel did get in touch, offered to move us rooms which I declined due to having to move all our belongings and not actually being moved away from the noise that was to come with the wedding that day. I did explain how the experience whilst staying at the hotel had put a downer on our break and that I felt we had been ripped off. She went away and sorted a partial refund for us which is appreciated. As lovely as the place is, I really wouldn’t recommend it to anyone due to the issues we had making it impossible to actually get some sleep. Lastly I have never stayed anywhere where there is no staff available at night. They finish at 7/8pm and that’s it then till the next morning. This I feel is a little on the unsafe side of how to run things in case an emergency happens who can help??

Nice big single room with a big comfy bed. Lovely clean white bedding and good tea and coffee in room. Nice side sea view and a great breakfast. Nice pleasant staff. Check in was good. Only downside was car park luckily I could get around on public transport which is good and cheap, as the amount of cars on the car park meant getting off was an issue. Would definitely stay again.

There are many such lovely family hotels in Exeter. They are very cozy ~ very close to the main campus and not far from the city center. It is a good choice to stay here for family visits! The family room for 3 people is very recommended. Besides the master bedroom with a large bed, there is also a small room with single beds.
Imperial Plymouth

What a great hotel - perfectly positioned for the theatre, restaurants and visiting the city/shops. Handily it also has free parking, first come first served. Our bedroom (we were upgraded on arrival) was very spacious and clean. It was especially nice to have armchairs in the room to make it more comfortable to sit and read without the need to perch on the bed or sit on the dressing table chair. The hotel provides a great choice at breakfast - fruit juice, yogurts, fruit, cereal, croissants etc as well as a great choice of hot options. More importantly to the enjoyment of our stay was that all the staff made us feel really welcome and did everything with genuine smiles. We loved it and will definitely stay here when we visit Plymouth again.
The Royal Hotel

We always stay at this comfortable and very friendly historical hotel by the river in Bideford. The staff are lovely and nothing seems to be too much trouble for them. The food is very good and everywhere is spotlessly clean. There seems to be a quietly ongoing programme of refurbishment with the restaurant and Palm Court room being recently completed to a high standard. We have stayed here in all seasons now and can say it’s warm and cosy even in February. The hotel’s own car parks are also very convenient and the same goes for the lift within the hotel. The hotel’s history, dating back in parts from 1688, is quirky and fascinating with a particular feature being the first floor Charles Kingsley lounge where we like relaxing with a drink or afternoon tea. Another highlight of our stays is to hear more historical detail about this characterful old hotel from Steve and Dee, the friendly housekeepers, and for us this really does add to the all-round enjoyable experience of staying here.
