We had booked directly from the hotel website for 3 nights in September. Two days before the arrival date we asked if it is possible to allow us to transfer the stay to any other period as the reservation was for my parents who are elderly and unable to travel during that period. They did not give us any alternative saying that the reservation is non-refundable. I asked them if I could even pay the difference for the transfer on another weekend, but they didn't give me that as an alternative either. I am also a businessman and I always give alternatives to my customers when possible, often absorbing costs. Some next weekend in September when the hotel is not full could serve and leave a happy customer, without costing them anything more. Bad management I would say..
