The look of this hotel is deceiving, as is the description they provide. The facade, lobby and sitting room are faithfully kept as a traditional manor house, but the rest of the hotel is like a chain hotel. Rooms were saw are small and modernized (i.e. not special), and the dining areas are huge modern mass feeding areas. Food is just ok. We reserved a "loch view" room several months in advance because we came to Scotland for the views at each place we stayed. Upon arrival, it was obvious they did not have the room we wanted due to several big conferences and groups, so we were first put in the basement with a tiny window where we could see the feet of people watching by and those people could see down into our room. We complained and then they gave us a "loch view" that was actually a view of the taxi drop off circle with constant noisy traffic. We gave up asking for another change for the rest of our three-night stay because the staff just snickered when we continued to mention our issue to the front desk, bell staff and concierge. NO ONE offered to carry our bags when there was the room change. So basically, we felt we were ripped off from having the "loch view". If you want an alternative to the huge, modern dining rooms, the other restaurants (and the spa) require a van ride because they are not near the main building. So it all feels like this place caters to mass bookings like conventions, car rally groups and corporations (the breakfast and dinners were crowded with conference attendees) while bumping couples like us to whatever is left - we were helpless and from another country. Note that we have a huge basis of comparison in luxury hotels in general, and Scottish hotels in particular.
