Wingrove House

Lovely setting, lovely staff but very mediocre food. We spent a very pleasant evening here enjoying the relaxed ambiance. Staff were charming, but our wine wasn’t poured or our water topped up - not huge ******* but vaguely annoying. The menu is small, (no bad thing) and the wine list comprehensive having an interesting and reasonably-priced selection. Food had a home-cooked, family dinner feel about it. My asparagus was over-cooked, my fillet steak strangely tasteless, the accompanying peppercorn sauce glutinous and a little lumpy, the green beans over-cooked. We were hungry and ate everything - we’d had a very nice time, but great cooking was not in evidence during our visit. Perhaps the chef had had an “off” day or, perhaps he/she needs to up their game.

We spent a night at this excellent hotel and I honestly can't fault it in any way. We had booked one of the premium deluxe rooms as a special treat but on arrival were upgraded to the best room of all, The Churchill , which was just the icing on the cake! Fantastic very large room exposed beams with great views to the church and countryside. The whole hotel is very stylishly decorated and has a very relaxed vibe. We also encountered the most friendly and efficient service from every single member of staff that you could ever hope for. Dinner was excellent and breakfast was also of a very high standard. Alfriston is such a pretty and interesting place and I am so glad we visited.Thanks to all at Wingrove House for such an enjoyable and memorable stay.

Absolutely wonderful Valentine's lunch today at this beautiful restaurant. The food was delicious, plentiful, presented perfectly and hot! Service was excellent. Our waiter was so lovely. No "Hi Guys" but was attentive and polite. Treating us as individuals with no rush or interruptions. Tastefully decorated room with lovely soft music playing as you ate. An absolute pleasure. We will definitely be returning. Felt really spoiled today. Thankyou!!

Wingrove House is a beautiful boutique hotel on the edge of Alfriston's high street. The property is charming with country character. Wonderful amenities including toiletries, fans in the rooms, on-site restaurant, plenty of storage, lounge areas for meeting/reading. It's a short walk to the middle of the village with great pubs, art, craft, book and souvenir shops. Staff are helpful and well informed about local walking trails, restaurants, etc. Rooms and public areas are kept clean and there's plenty of parking in a private courtyard. The bed was comfy and they have built in USB charges for your devices. We would most definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

In January 2023 we were blown away by the service and food in the restaurant and vowed to return the following year to celebrate my partner's birthday. Sadly to our huge disappoin**ent things were very different. The service was in a word: haphazard. One member of staff got the drinks order completely wrong and when our first course arrived we'd literally taken one bite when our main course arrived! It created discomfort and dampened our spirits. The food was very good but the a**osphere we'd hoped for had completely disappeared. I had mentioned it was my partner's birthday when I booked, but this was completely ignored - other places we've visited have always presented us with a little chocolate plate, tot of liqueur or even a rendition of happy birthday. But this might not be the done thing at Wingrove. If the front of staff were a little more on it and a bit more welcoming we might consider returning, but I kind of doubt it.

Brilliant service. Very comfortable. Great food. Stay at least one a year with a group of friends. some from France. No where better in Alfriston and quick walk up the high street. Just a pity the shops close at 5pm sharp. Thank you to all the team.

Fantastic staff accommodation and food

Having stayed here several times before our expectations were high Our room was a premium plus room It wasn’t much different to the other rooms we’d booked before at much less cost Although the bathroom was a good size Later that evening around 10 jyst as we were settling down for the night we were stunned to hear extremely loud music coming from the room underneath us After 5 minutes I rang reception who didn’t answer I rang again 5 minutes later and I asked if someone could ask the people underneath us to turn down there music I was told it would be done straight away It was a little while before the music was turned down slightly but it wasn’t fir another hour that it was turned off by which time it was after 11 We discovered the next day it was the kitchen underneath us and they’d been shouting and playing loud music I imagine whilst they were clearing up Our room was also filled with cooking smells from the kitchen and there was a air conditioning unit outside the bedroom window Not what we were expecting from a £230 a night room tbh We’d stayed in a classic room before for a lot less and it was quieter didn’t smell of cooking and we weren’t disturbed by loud music late at night ! Slightly disappointed as it was a special occasion that had the Sheen taken off it

Really nice food & lovely setting but not matched by the service which, although efficient lacked warmth.It would not stop us returning,hopefully it will improve & we will be made to feel more welcome next time.
