Esperanza hostel is cheap and perfect for longer term travellers or backpackers who don't want a party hostel, but want to save some money and get to experience all the best bits of Antigua on a budget. The rooms aren't bells and whistles but it's a friendly, quiet place with fairly good WiFi and a fantastic rooftop terrace which overlooks the whole city. There is also a kitchen which is well stocked of appliances so you can cook your own meals. The hostel is a great base to stay if you want to do the volcano hikes to Acatenango or Fuego as the attached tour company (Pachamama) run them with pick ups direct to the door. I also found out that the profits from the tours and hostel go to the charity NGO, I am Hope, which works to help women and children who have experienced domestic abuse.

This is my favourite hostel in all of Antigua. It is run by a very helpful and friendly team, and has a well-equipped kitchen. This hostel is also an NGO which supports vulnerable women and children from a wide range of difficult backgrounds, so if you stay with them your money is going towards an amazing cause. It's also in a super convenient location! Este es mi albergue favorito en toda Antigua. Está dirigido por un equipo muy servicial y amable, y tiene una cocina bien equipada. Este albergue también es una ONG que apoya a mujeres y niños vulnerables de una amplia gama de entornos difíciles, por lo que si te quedas con ellos, tu dinero se destinará a una causa increíble. ¡También está en una ubicación muy conveniente!

Not only is the hostel well-equipped and offers tours, but the proceeds support a local NGO that works for women's empowerment and provides free therapy for abused children and women. In addition, the proceeds are used to buy food for children from families who cannot feed them. The hostel also has a social vibe with a family a**osphere!

I have stayed at a few different hostels around Antigua. I thought I would give Esperanza a try because I read that they do great work supporting young disadvantaged children who have suffered abuse. Firstly my stay there was perfect. The location is central and just a few minutes walk to the main square. The price was super affordable and the staff were so friendly and helpful. I also took advantage of the volcano hike which they offered in partnership with a hiking organisation. I was well looked after throughout! Highly recommend!!

Établissement plutôt bien situé avec une terrasse très sympa (vue sur un volcan). Cependant, le dortoir n'a pas du tout répondu à mes attentes. J'avais réservé un lit dans un dortoir pour 4 personnes et me suis retrouvée dans une chambre vraiment minuscule avec 3 lits, nous n'étions que 2 dans cette chambre et nous nous sentions très à l'étroit. Pas d'éclairage individuel, pas de prise à proximité de mon lit, literie pas du tout confortable. La salle de bains commune était vétuste, sale et inondée. Le personnel est certes arrangeant, mais pas vraiment aimable ni avenant. Par ailleurs, j'avais réservé deux nuits dans cet établissement et lorsque je suis arrivée le premier soir, on m'a annoncé que je ne pouvais rester qu'une nuit. Cela peut arriver, mais j'aurais apprécié être prévenue à l'avance. J'ai dû chercher une chambre à Antigua à la dernière minute lors d'un week-end très prisé où tous les hôtels affichaient complets. (Je tiens à préciser que cet imprévu n'influence pas mon avis global.) Même si le prix paraît imbattable, cet établissement n'est pas à la hauteur selon moi (cela dépend peut-être du type de chambre).
