Last minute getaway and this seemed like the ideal place! The roads aren't for the faint hearted in the dark, they were treacherous after a couple of days of ice cold weather but the pub was warm and welcoming. We checked in to our room which did overlook the road but there was very little noise. We had the largest room, The Whitestone Gill, which was very spacious albeit with a slightly outdated feel in the bathroom. We watched a bit of television before dinner but did spend the first 15 minutes re-engaged the aerial cable due to how loose it was meaning we lost signal frequently. We ate in the restaurant and by gosh is the food good. The portions are considerable but the food is absolutely top notch. We had to wait a little due to a fryer going out of action mid service but this was apologised for and we didn't mind a warm cozy pub atmosphere in the meantime. We did have room for a beautifully cooked chocolate fondant pudding with the tartest cherry ice cream which complimented the dessert perfectly. Service throughout was outstanding and it was a packed pub on a Saturday night in November. There is no signal here, at all, wifi worked well in the rooms and in the restaurant but phone signal was out of the question. The bed was simply divine, the duvet was perfectly weighted and the pillows were pillowy soft. A very good nights sleep was had by all. Breakfast which you ordered at the table was again all local produce cooked exceptionally well with a lot of continental options to choose from. I loved the fact that walkers could come in from breakfast regardless of needing to stay in the hotel. Check out was smooth and we were on our way to Aysgarth. This place would be even more delightful in the spring and summer.
