The hostel is basic and there's no two ways about it. Yes it's cheap, so cheap that my friends and I got a private room each. But I feel that the hostel could charge more and then update the decor and facilities and also offer more of a substantial and welcoming breakfast than just a pot of jam and a loaf of bread. However, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The location is also great. In central Sandakan and it felt very secure. The hostel does what it needs to do if you need a cheap place to stay.

The hotel location is very good..with good parking space..clean room.. The water heater is branded with the cup n aircond..no wonder the deposit is kind of expensive rm 150 (returnable)....the problem is just the TV have no signal so i cant watch tv during my stay. Book for 2 night but if u want the room to be clean u hv to request via qr code provided...oh ya during check in u hv to fill the phone via online..with qr code provided n upload ur ic n ur booking. Overall its a pleasent stay...

Room was clean n people r friendly except d barcode system wasn’t so good. Sometimes I can’t get in n the worse thing is I couldn’t find my room as it says store room bigger than d room number. Can at least cover d word with a bigger room number

The hotel was incredible welcoming and the receptionist was lovely.
The room was consistent with other hotels in this price range. It's a local area with many small restaurants located nearby.
The room was clean and spacious and the water was hot. Shower was nice. They left us 2 bottles of water as well.
Overall very nice.

Glad that I stayed just for 1 night, but that 1 night cause me to have a bar flu, as I am allergic to dusty. The place itself is okay, and quite convenient for those who just want to stay for a day transit, as it is near to the airport, and only 20mins to Sepilok Orang Utan. The place is rundown, as u can see in the pictures, they seem not to have effort to change the bad wall paper, clean the dusty etc. Really need to refurbish again. Stay away if u have an allergic to dusty, u will regret like me. But a good area for transit in terms of location. Breakfast food was just okay.

The resort environment is very good. It is a ten-minute walk from the Orangutan Sanctuary. It is recommended to watch the feeding at 3 pm. You can go to the innermost nursery center at two o'clock to see the little orangutans playing. The service staff will not speak Chinese, but people. They are very good. In the morning, it is a simple buffet. There are many animals in the resort. The birds keep calling. The disadvantage is that the swimming pool is too small.

The hotel is in the jungle with all the good and bad things that come with it. On the plus side: close proximity to the Orangutan and Sun Bear Rehabilitation Centers, as well as the Rainforest Research Center. 5-15 minutes walk. Beautiful, almost untouched nature around. The territory of the hotel is well-groomed and pleasant. Rooms are good with spacious bathrooms. There is an air conditioner that works quite well. From the bad: tasteless monotonous food (there is no alternative, we are in the jungle) breakfasts are edible, but no more, poorly trained staff in the cafe, barely warm water in the shower in the morning (I did not dare to wash my hair), lack of brushes, combs, hair dryers and etc. However, all this is excusable, understandable, and I would not write about it if it were not for the ”icing on the cake”: just disgusting pillows. A piece of high dense foam rubber, from which the neck becomes numb in a minute. Falling asleep on this is not an easy task. It is difficult to explain this mockery of visitors by the conditions of the jungle.

What I liked a lot: Well situated to visit main attractions in Sepilok: Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre/Sunbear centre/Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), free shuttle bus to the main attractions (09h-14h-16) which was really great. Also offer tours at reasonable prices e.g. Mangroves & Firefly Cruise (recommended). Free water dispenser.
To note: rooms are very basic (there is airco), we had some ants in the room, bathroom is outside. Breakfast was limited and minimal.
When we were there internet was not functional, luckily we had taken local simcard before with unlimited data so for us, this was not a big issue. Before coming to the hotel, I had sent a mail to have info about tours they offered, but never received a reply therefore I had booked tours with an agency which in the end was more expensive then when I would have it booked with Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat. Possible to book tours on the spot (no need to reserve before coming) but I did not know this in advance.

GGuest UserThe deco is absolutely stunning. Pretty, can't deny this. Kids were happy to see the hello kitty theme, small size couch for the kids to sit. Downside is the amenities for this accommodation is poorly maintained. Front door can't close, owner ask us to just lock gate don't close front door or door will not able to be open from inside (?!), balcony look dangerous for children, so many sure not to let any kids go there. Lucky just book the place for a night, else will be worry for safely. Pic included where door required to stay open whole day/night to avoid locked in. Lol.

GGuest UserCentral in the main town, great base for day tours to the parks/sanctuary/River. Few options for food along the waterfront. Sandakan seems a quiet town with a few tourists but mainly local (v friendly) population, clearly a short stop/jump off spot. Options for 'drinks' are few - this is a no alcohol establishment, but there is a roof bar 3 mins walk for an evening beverage (the baling Hotel roof). Very clean..comfy bed, great aircon and hot shower. For the price the included breakfast had fresh fruits, to order omelets /eggs/ rice/ noodles and toast. No complaints!!!

FFeel the WorldFirst time to Sandakan, arrived late at night so chose a hotel which should be easy ti find and bigger scale at avoid any surprise of late check-in.
Location is 20 mins Grab from airport. Nice entrance and staff is friendly. It is quite an old old but I think they refurbished. Look good but the facilities kind of dated. First night hoping for a nice hot shower but the shower head fell down. Luckily could put it back as dont want to change room late at night. My bath tub stopper chain broken so after a bath the water stayed.
We booked junior suite as I didn’t want carpet room. Smaller than on the photo but overall clean. Balcony is not really for sitting out though. However the hotel carpet outside the room smells a bit I guessed ventilation was the issue.
Breakfast was good. I booked via trip.com to include a child but somehow that we not counted and they supposed to charge me a fee. Finally they offered for courtesy.
Best part was the swimming pool with slide, fun for kids.
If to explore the Samdakan, this could be a good location as walking distance to Agnes Keith House, then taking the 100 steps to go to the town.

GGuest UserBeautiful stay with an atmosphere where the room is complete. Lovely comfortable bed, mosquito net, clean linen and air conditioning. The breakfast is very limited and not a must have to look forward to, which is a shame because it really completes your stay. Can they still improve? You pay more for each extra; yoga, water, etc. While if you order à la carte the food is delicious. The swimming pool is clean, the temperature of the surrounding area is not really cooling, but our kids had a great time in it. Enough beds around it. We were here because the rest around it was fully booked. In terms of price/quality ratio, I thought it was less and you don't have to be here in terms of extra luxury for what you pay. Too bad because with all the finishing touches, this would really be highly recommended! Perhaps too critical and by Malaysia standards this is a luxury :) The staff is super friendly, can sing well and is always willing to help you.

GGuest UserWe got this location on a cancellation by another hotel and couldn't have been more pleased. Our Junior Suite was spacious and comfortable. The buffet was excellent and dinner at the Chinese restaurant on 1st floor terrific. Not Halal certified (i.e.: Pork and liquor served here) we enjoyed the dim-sum brunch on Saturday. The evening entertainment left everyone happy with pictures to remember the performance. The owner is a fantastic host. Limited English programming on TV. A destination in itself.

GGuest UserWe stayed here for 3 nights and absolutely loved it! The standard rooms are on the basic side, however for the money we paid we felt this was more than adequate (Considering you are in the middle of the jungle). The staff and the food were amazing and you’re well fed with the free breakfast! Actually very surprised at the previous reviews on here as the staff went above and beyond to cater to us and seemed really interested in our travel plans etc. Nothing was ever a bother for them and they seemed to really like their jobs from our point of view. We did make an effort to speak to all the staff (human decency), which in turn they were always super welcoming to us! The closeness to the attractions you want to see in Sepilok is the main bonus, with the orangutans and the sun bears being within a 10 minute walk. We spoke to some other travellers who weren’t staying here but came for lunch and they said how they highly regretted not booking here as theirs was practically derelict. The pool area is great for a cool down and very refreshing and the wildlife we seen around the resort alone was amazing. We 100% would come back and would definitely recommend!

JJenniferWe stay for 2nights. 1st we got the room with electrical problem, as I request, they able to change another room for me. Lobby was clean. I got the ground floor room right beside the road. The room can hear sound of vehicle pass by, if unfortunately you get the people playing their motorbike then no choice.
Nice location, right in IJM. Alot of food and drinks nearby.
The room not so clean but acceptable.
