Lovely spacious room. Think we must have had an upgrade as it was more than just a standard double room. Bed was huge and very comfy. Had a sofa in the room too. Breakfast was lovely and amazing for only £4 each! Overall thought it was really good value for money. Hotel has lots of character, free parking (through a very narrow opening) and about half the price of nearby Premier inn and a much nicer stay. I expect the prices will go up soon though once everyone hears it’s back open again.

The rooms are dirty and so are the common parts. The garden Is nice and the breakfast Is good. The car park Is Easy (outsider the hotel) , the people are friendly. You can go downtown on a short walk. It's a shame that the clenliness of the hotel Is so neglected, because the Building Is very nice.

Great to see this lovely hotel at its best again. Staff couldn’t have been more welcoming, breakfast very good quality and plentiful.

We travelled from Milton Keynes and had a Fantastic stay. The staff are exceptional. The food is outstanding. The rooms are good for the prices and there is so much to see and do around it. Highly recommend. The Camembert is wow. As was the gammon. The extensive gin menu and the decor, everything is fab. We will be back.

Fantastic Sunday lunch! Very reasonably priced, with huge portions, amazing quality, and friendly service, we could not feel more welcome. We were a party of four. Starters included soup and bread (it could have been a full weekday lunchtime treat), the smoked salmon was simply gorgeous and the terrine was yummy. We all opted for roast dinners, lamb, chicken and beef... all were delicious and the roast potatoes, veg and Yorkshire puddings were wonderful. The treacle sponge was one of the best I ever had, the bread and butter pudding was yummy. One really kind thing was that of our party loves cheese and it was not on the menu. We asked the staff and it was no problem and they made a cheese platter for her. They brought great teapots and were happy to refresh them. The service throughout was outstanding! The newly refurbished dining room, which is art deco in design, looks out over wonderful gardens, I'm looking forward to the dining experience in the summer! The brand new owners and brand new management team, plus all the staff are doing a fabulous job! I'd recommend going there for lunch, dinner, or a cream tea, you will love it!

I've stayed in this hotel before, but it seems to have had a management change (no longer Mercure). I reported a few issues: such as there being no milk in the room, the shower dispensers being empty and the wifi not working. Also, the cleaning staff entered the room before I'd checked out. I believe all of these are easily fixable with staff training. I hope to return.

Room door does not close, it opens automatically with a push, even if it is 'locked'. A lamp didn't work, no hand soap,... everything seems rather measured. We couldn't get into the room before normal check-in hours, even though the hotel was almost empty. Beautiful building, but a shame about the tasteless architectural interventions, combined with cheap new furniture (breakfast room). Nowadays, for next to nothing, you can find authentic English furniture that would fit perfectly in such a beautiful building and would appear much warmer.
