The Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Surprise

We had booked the Buttonwood Inn in the fall of 2025 for a retirement trip with another couple. My husband was subsequently diagnosed with prostate cancer and his treatment schedule caused us to cancel our trip five months in advance. Our rooms were rebooked. We worked with the owners on a refund schedule of their choosing to help minimize the impact of our 2025 cancelation and rebooked our trip with them for this fall. Our traveling partner of over forty years just received his diagnosis of prostate cancer with surgery to take place during our scheduled trip, so we have once again been forced to cancel. We were not only denied a refund, but our credit card was charged the full amount for two rooms immediately, before the scheduled trip was even to take place. Additionally, the owner insinuated that we were making up these cancer diagnoses due to the "coincidence" in their timing. We weren't aware that cancer worked that way. She accused us of being the sole reason for their "no refund policy" even after admitting that they had other cancellations last year. The most shocking was when she provided us with the suggestion to travel without our traveling partner as he battles cancer. We have empathy for the plight of small businesses, but allowances for extenuating circumstances should at least be considered, not flatly dismissed. We had hoped that a refund would be offered if the rooms were rebooked. Bottom line, unless you are 100% sure you will be able to stay at this establishment when you presumably are booking months in advance, look elsewhere to a place that has a more understanding refund policy.

This was far and away one of the most enjoyable inn experiences we have ever had! My husband and I spent two wonderful nights here for a little getaway to the North Conway area. Donna and Doug were amazing hosts and ensured we had a comfortable stay. The breakfast was a highlight, as was the sitting area in the back yard. I cannot recommend this inn enough!

We had a memorable experience and stay at this family-friendly bed and breakfast. The rooms were comfortable and well suited for traveling with kids, and the inn itself was beautifully decorated. While the space feels historic, it’s elevated by creative, curated décor—including a charming winter-themed village along the walls that made the whole place feel like a Hallmark movie. The highlight of our stay was breakfast by Chef Liz. As a culinary chef, she focuses on seasonal menus, and every meal was a refined with sophisticated comfort in mind. We also loved the warm, welcoming family who runs the inn—they truly made us feel at home. The location is perfect in winter, with a sledding hill and ice skating pond a short walk away. Overall, this is a wonderful choice for families looking for unique dining, cozy charm, and easy access to winter fun. Can’t wait to return.

Great location, the Inn was reasonable priced, friendly innkeepers, pretty good food, room was comfy. Not much not to like.

Warm and friedly atmosphere. A family like atmosphere. Donna, Doug are wonderful proprietors and maintain a beautiful and charming classical 200 plus year home and B&B. My wife and zI have been twice and look fotward to a third and.... we highly recommend.

A hidden gem, minutes from North Conway We had a wonderful trip. For the moment we arrived we were treated like family. The property is so beautiful, it’s a hidden gem! We will definitely be returning

We stayed here for only one night and wished we could have stayed more as we had the place to ourselves. The house is so cozy and comfortable and we enjoyed lounging by the pool. The innkeepers were super friendly and breakfast was amazing. I’m so glad they opened up for single night stays and we will definitely come back when we are back in NH next summer.

We stayed at 7 hotels during our holiday and this was our favourite. The couple who own and run the hotel, couldn’t be nicer and more helpful during our stay. It had a lovely swimming pool and had a very homely feel to our stay. Great place to access hiking trails and close to get up mountain Washington

Excellent, quiet, and quaint bed and breakfast. Easy access to North Conway and its many restaurants. Beds were comfy and breakfast was delicious, with bottomless coffee. However, the best thing about the inn are the hosts, Donna and Doug. They are warm, engaging and personable. The best hosts we have encountered. We look forward to our next visit!
