We arrived in the afternoon and shown to our room which was out of the 1970s! The room had an overpowering smell of air freshener. Mustard coloured curtains with a frilly pelmet. We paid for an upgraded room but were very disappointed. No towels in the bathroom, we asked for clean towels from reception and were given damp towels which had just been laundered, so we put them over the radiator The breakfast was poor, we had a full English. My husband said he could mend the sole of his shoes with the bacon it was so hard. The sausages were inedible, hard and poor quality.

Welcoming, clean, large rooms, walk in shower, large TV, Wi-Fi, very comfortable and airy. We slept well. Excellent breakfast which we tastily enjoyed, cooked and presented appetisingly and kept us full for the day. Plenty of free parking safely. Lovely garden to relax and enjoy. Very polite and pleasant staff. A very beautiful homely hotel. Many interesting places in the village of Bamber with Tudor homes and castle. We are planning to visit and stay again.

As regular customers, we were wondering if the experience would be less enjoyable after the closure of the ever-popular carvery. As it turned out, eating elsewhere was no problem, and drinks were available from the bar in the evening if required. The breakfast is even better than before, as it is freshly cooked to order, and delicious! So we were pleasantly surprised, and will certainly continue to enjoy The Tollgate for our twice a year visits.

What do you do with an ex-Best Western (I assume - read has new owners) hotel, in a beautiful village, that was possibly at it’s best decades ago, but bringing it up-to-date might not be economic ? Interesting conundrum … probably can’t knock it down and build new housing on extensive land area. Meanwhile, rooms are ‘tired’; uninviting, though not uncomfortable. So if price is right, and there are no other alternatives, could be ‘right’ choice. Restaurant and bar closed. Breakfast - clearly pre-prepared as bacon was dry and ‘rock hard’; other items luke warm - adequate, no more. good luck working out the future …. might be back if there is one, who knows

I had a two nights stay at the tollgate this weekend. I needed somewhere to stay between a house move and this was the most reasonable price near Worthing for £115 for two nights. On first impressions the area is quiet and looks and feels safe. Nice big car park and reception was easy to find. the receptionist was very pleasant and welcoming and she got me checked in quickly. I had room 108 in westgate. First impressions was good, furniture a little dated but the room was clean, spacious and had everything I needed, such as tea/ coffee, chair, table, large tv and desk area with a nice comfortable bed. The shower room was lovely, really happy about that as I love a pamper! Shame there is no bath but the walk in shower was great. Only issue was the shower wasn’t as powerful as expected, took a while to work out how to get warm water to come through and the toilet didn’t flush well unless the lid was down but this wasn’t a massive deal. Plenty of clean towels and toiletries available. There were no robes however which would have been great. I woke up early to get breakfast early and to have some peace and quiet. The breakfast hostess and chef were lovely and very welcoming. I’m not sure what other reviewers mean by there “not being a full English available” when there was a full breakfast menu and continental choices available. I have added the menu to my review. The English breakfast was delicious, I was very happy! the breakfast room was set out really nicely with table service. This was a lovely hotel, not the most up to date but was reasonably priced for my stay. The only things that did let my stay down was not the hotel but the other guests… The rooms are unfortunately not very sound proof… so you can hear everything in the corridors. People kept slamming the doors and sometimes late at night which would shake the walls, no idea why people had to keep slamming them but it was very inconsiderate. There were a few guests having conversations in the hallways and banging on each other’s doors late at night?? somebody also brought a dog in and allowed it to bark constantly at one point. To stop this the hotel could put up signs by the doors telling guests not slam them and to keep the noise down. maybe this should be mentioned at check in? Or better still, sound proofing the rooms and anti door slammers installed. there should be no dogs allowed unless they are well behaved. at one point it did feel like I was staying in a hostel and not a hotel because of these guests and it nearly ruined my stay.

Looking for a hotel for a group booking in the future for about 20 of us and having previously stayed thought this was a good hotel. It is and we had a lovely weekend and ready to come back next year with our group. Plenty to do in the area and a great hotel to retire to. Room 201 great

This is the second time we have stayed here in one of their 2 amazing jacuzzi rooms. Such great rooms for the price and a nice mix of old and modern décor. Yes it is very sad and not great to hear the restaurant had closed, the hotel informed us straight away and gave us the new options. We loved the cooked breakfast here and having it as room service so were a little worried about the breakfast being continental and also not room service. On arrival I asked if I could come down and grab some breakfast in the morning, not only did they offer room service to have it brought up to us they even mage us and printed off a menu to pick things from, that is what I call going the extra mile, very impressed. I would highly recommend this hotel, I am sure they will have a new restaurant and bar open in no time at all, it has so much potential.

What’s happening? No staff, no atmosphere, no restaurant or bar. Unfortunately The Old Tollgate has quickly become a shadow of its former self. A glorified B&B guesthouse. The restaurant side has completely gone. No bar, no lunch or evening meals. The rooms are still okay, some very nice but now over priced. The breakfast that is included is poor. Gone has the full English, good choice of various fruits, yogurts, cereals and porridge to an Englishman’s attempt at a continental breakfast. A slice of smoked salmon and a couple of slices of cheap packet ham. No breakfast staff on hand to welcome guests, used tables not cleared and have to ask for choices to be refilled, orange juice, croissants and coffee. We have been staying here for 7/8 years, back in the Best Western days but this will be our last time. Thank you and goodbye.
