Brilliantly located steps away from everything you want to see in Bruges, but the town is so small it would be tough to find a hotel that’s too far away. But there was a possible safety and security concern. After check-in, we went to our room and found the door ajar. No key needed; we just pushed it open. We alerted the front desk, but he just shrugged it off. There was also an issue with the front desk lying to us. Our second day in town, we walked around the city and came back to view the historic ruins under the hotel. We didn’t identify ourselves as hotel guests, but the hotel is required to provide public access to the historic ruins they built over. The front desk told us we could not see the ruins without a formal guided tour through one of their preferred travel partners. We emailed all three of them immediately. A full day later, one of them said the ruins were permanently closed, which is false. Another offered to sell us an expensive guided tour that would include the ruins. When we went to check out of the hotel, we had the same front desk agent and expressed regret that we couldn’t see the ruins. He said we could see them at any time by using our keycard on the elevator to the bottom floor. Crowne Plaza appears to be taking efforts to keep non-guests out of the hotel and away from the public ruins. We are filing a complaint with the Bruges city because be believe Crowne Plaza is in violation of the terms of its deed. With so many hotels in Bruges, we would not recommend this one.
