Bury st Edmund’s is a lovely place but perhaps the Angel doedn’t have enough competition. They seem to have a - don’t need to try- less than proactive approach to customer service. Check-in was utterly unengaging to the point of being positively frosty. The bar staff were clearly on the same ‘customer appreciation’ course as the check-in robots. Fawning is nauseous and thankfully absent but it would have been nice had they suggested even an illusion of valuing our custom.

On a positive note the staff in the hotel were all extremely helpful and friendly, particularly the porter and the coffee was good. However, there is much to dislike. My biggest irritation is where the lighting in a hotel bedroom prevents you from sitting up and reading in bed. In my bedroom the bedside lamps were so dim that I had to reposition a standard lamp close to the bed to obtain sufficient light in order to read my book. Also the decor in the room was very dated with a propensity for sludgy green colouring. Fungus the Bogeyman would have felt very much at home. Turning to the restaurant I had the early pre- theatre supper choosing the fish which was Wolf fish something I had never seen on a menu before. This is not surprising as it was like eating wet cotton wool, fibrous and tasteless. For breakfast I chose the smashed avocado with poached eggs. The avocado was well past 'its sell by date'. The Angel Hotel needs a 'kick up the backside'. It is an attractive building situated centrally in a historic town and could be so much better.

I planned a surprise overnighter to celebrate retirement. Unfortunately it was not quite upto our expectations. Our room was comfortable especially the bed. The room was in dire need of a good lick of paint and freshening up. There were distinct dirty smudges around the light fittings. Alarmingly there was clear evidence of black mould on the ceiling and tiles in the bathroom. This really was unacceptable so I complained to the management. To be fair they offered us an alternative room or some reimbursement. We chose reimbursement. We found it very impersonal at reception. Open plan and we could easily be overheard by other residents. Breakfast was good as was the service but everthing arrived at the sametime. No sooner having taken two/three spoonfuls of cereal when our cooked breakfast arrived. Overall it was ok but it can easily be so much better!

Dined here several times for lunch and dinner before deciding to stay as an overnight guest. The bar and restaurant are very well managed. The bar person mixed an excellent drink and they came quickly. Rooms are a good size; the bed was comfy and the linen nice and crisp. The pillows were a little disappointing. The hotel is very clean with an active house-keeping team of friendly and professional staff. The thing that stood out as, not in-line with the rest of the hotel, was the check-in and check-out experience. It lacked the professionalism of the rest of the staff.

Thoroughly enjoyed a delicious meal at this hotel. Staff were very professional but friendly and the ambience was really good. We look forward to returning again in the not too distant future and enjoying some other culinary delights in a very pleasant atmosphere.

Visited for lunch on a Saturday, the food was very tasty and we enjoyed our visit. The puddings were very small we felt (and delicious, hence would have appreciated a larger portion size). Nice decor I thought. The main downside is that they don’t provide parking, and it was difficult to find a car parking space nearby.

A joy to return to the Angel, sadly just for a one night stay, but the hotel was just as lovely an experience as I remember from a few years back, but with the advantage of sympathetic refurbishments to bring it up to date but still retaining that lovely traditional feel. We upgraded from a classic to an Impressions room in the courtyard. Our accommodation was large, tastefully decorated, well equipped, clean and very comfortable. We didn't have the full dining experience but chose a couple of starters from the a la carte menu to enjoy in the comfort of the bar, and these were delicious, the pasta tasted home made. Breakfast was also really good, with sufficient choice and good quality ingredients, beautifully cooked. Above all I have to say how impressed I was with every member of staff that we encountered during our stay. So friendly, professional and welcoming.

Had a birthday afternoon tea for my mother-in-law. Very low uncomfortable seats, very dry overcooked scones, muffin had a rubbery texture, very unhygienic glass table, with a large gap round the edge where you could see where food had previously gone down and not cleaned out . All in all disappointed with the Angel Hotel
