We found the hotel online and called ahead to make a reservation the same day. The hotel is quirky and owner managed. They have been spending the last few years improving it and refurbishing it. Its gorgeous high position on the coast means it sees all weathers as well as offering fine views. If you like small, unusual, charming hotels, Craigard could be for you. I think it lacks personality and it could be more sympathetically restored. Personally I'd love to see it finished more classically and with better attention to detail. We didn't get to see one of the impressive sounding seaview suites but we were allocated a nice and comfortable dog friendly room at the back down a few corridors. Good - The location, the building is impressive, it's historical, it's independent, the bed was really comfortable, big bath sheets were great. Excellent WiFi signal in room 9. The view from the restaurant was excellent. The price was good out of season. The waitress at dinner was polite and helpful. Things we'd change - Replace the noisy bathroom fan for starters. Upgrade the electrics so all lights can be switched off from one bedside switch. Get a proper fire notice rather than a piece of paper pined to the pine wardrobe. The sever at breakfast was attired in Grey sweat pants and hoodie and trainers. Breakfast was just ok. Get a designer in to advise on the restaurant scene and replace the nasty dining chairs. Get the staff to be more attentive. I only had a main course at dinner because I never saw the waitress again all night after she'd checked my lamb was ok. The plate wasn't cleared and I wasn't offered dessert, coffee or a night cap....a missed opportunity for more revenue.

amazing stay, amazing property and amazing breakfast. Did feel a little sad about the night manager whom, when we asked whether the bar was open at 10:15pm after we’d got in after dinner, told us she was serving till 10:30. We said we’d only want one as we’d had a few with dinner and we’re met with the reply of: if you’ve already had a couple then you’ve probably had enough. Other than that everything was excellent and exceeded expectations.

When we were ordering the room for the 28th we were sure it was the top of the line room. We are senior citizens. We were given a room with three beds off to the side. The TV and remote were worthless. The lamps in the room did not work, and the staff could not tell us how to get them to work. The next morning we noticed the room next to ours was the top of the line room we requested from *******. For an extra fee They were able to give it to us for another night, which was the excellent ******* charged us for room.

I have decided to break this review down into segments of our stay. Firstly, our room was dated but clean. An array of heaters were situated around the room, only some in working order. The bed was hard and uncomfortable. Whenever you moved you could hear springs "boing". My husband spent the night fearing he was going to fall out of the bed as it had no support. The bathroom looked modernised but water pressure was bad at sink. Air bubbles and dirty brown water was what met us on use, after letting it run for a while it did clear. We had booked in for dinner, owner didn't tell us that the restaurant was full. Whilst we were sitting in the lounge having a pre dinner drink, staff began to set a table up in the lounge (after removing coffee table to make space) and told us and other guests that's where we would eat, side by side, crammed into the middle of the floor space in the room with all the couches, chairs etc surrounding us. One gentleman was so angered he left the accommodation and asked his company be refunded their costs. Another chose to now have his meal as room service, and my husband and I said that we would now have to go into town and find somewhere else to have our meal. Only issue now was, we had had a couple of pre dinner drinks and could no longer drive and would now also have to pay out for taxis. The owner when confronted with this absolute shambles could not have cared less. Her attitude was beyond rude. She came into the lounge, put £10 on the table and said, "there, it's £4 each way into town I have been assured" then turned and walked out. Talk about missing the point! To say we were furious would be an understatement. She gave a very unapologetic apology at some point during this full confrontation. We returned her money, paid our drinks bill, went to change, and on returning downstairs the conversation being held between the owner and another staff member (male) became stilted and stopped. Ever get the impression you are being spoken about? We then left to go into town. On return we went straight to our room for the most uncomfortable nights sleep. Breakfast was okay, it equalled no bowls set out for cereal/fruit. Smallest pot of coffee between 2 persons and relatively slow service considering there was only myself and my husband left to cater for. The food was fine and all other staff members we met were nice. So, on reflection I would say this, spend your time and money elsewhere. The rudest most inhospitable owner I have ever had the misfortune to meet. You won't be well rested, and potentially you won't be well fed either. Avoid!

Old whiskey baron house. Staff could be a little more enthused when interacting with guests.

The property is in an amazing location, the dining room has commanding views over the water and Campbeltown. We have stayed here before and loved it, but rather disappointed this time as the place is showing it’s age. Staff are wonderful as is the food
