When I searched online several months' ago for a boutique resort and spa in Arizona, the name Civana kept coming up. Now I know why. I was looking for a much-needed solo getaway and the website and reviews that I read on Trip Advisor and elsewhere seemed to check all of the right boxes. They were right! I loved every aspect of it: The entire staff was courteous and knowledgeable. The facilities were spacious, clean and well laid out. There were a broad variety of classes to choose from, from beginner level to advanced. The grounds were well-maintained. Once you book your room, you're able to sign up for classes and you shouldn't put that off. I got everything I wanted but I noticed that once I was there many things were wait listed. If you book a spa treatment, you're allowed to use all of the spa's facilities on that day, which includes the aqua therapy room, the private heated pool, steam room, and the relaxation room. (Be sure to be on the 2nd floor deck during sunset; it was spectacular.) I treated myself to a great massage at the expert hands of Tina. The regular pool for all guests is also heated and very well maintained. Within minutes of a guest leaving, the staff quickly turns the chaise lounge over for someone else to sit. The wait staff is constantly offering guests the opportunity to order food and drinks poolside. There is also a fire pit there and jacuzzi. Although I hadn't asked for it, I think I got an upgraded room, which was on the second of two floors directly overlooking the pool. It was roomy, well-designed and thoroughly cleaned by the housekeeping staff each day. There's a great fitness room with pretty much everything you'd want there. I highly recommend doing one of the many organized hikes that are part of the class schedule. I did two, both from 7A-10A; one was intermediate and the other was intermediate-advanced. (The major difference was that the latter was steeper and rockier.) There's a capacity of just 10 guests for the roughly 15-minute van ride; both hikes were around 2.5 miles and each featured expert guides: Leslie and Chad, and Tommy and Megan, all of whom were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The hikes were a great way to meet plenty of other guests and the up close view of the various cacti, particularly the majestic Saguaro, was magnificent. While I didn't eat any meals at Civana's restaurant, Tessa, I ate at the bar on my first night. While I don't recall the friendly bartender's name, she made an expert Old-Fashioned! The bar has plenty of seating, much of which faces the gaslit fireplace. I had rented a car so it was easy for me to do the five-minute drive into Carefree and nearby Cave Creek. There are plenty of restaurants in both and a nice shopping area in the former. I particularly enjoyed Black Mountain Cafe in Carefree, where I had a salad most days for lunch. At night, I liked Keeler's Steakhouse and Tonto Bar and Grill. Dinner reservations are highly recommended. I'm probably leav
