Having visited many country house hotels over the years I have decided that there are good ones and great ones, Gidleigh definitely comes into the latter category because lots of things come together to create a glorious travel experience. Location is superb. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with the river Teign running through it. It’s also a great place to strike out and explore the wild scenery of Dartmoor with its rich cultural heritage. Reception will provide you with a free booklet giving details of where to go without even having to take your car out. Wining and Dining are a joy, as you would expect from a restaurant with a Michelin star. Bedrooms are well appointed with nice touches such as complimentary Madeira, breakfast tea and a daily newspaper. The public areas are wonderful for relaxation. But the jewel in the crown is the staff - nothing is too much trouble for them. Service in all settings is courteous, friendly and unrushed, making guests feel they have found a home from home. All in all the quintessential country house experience.

First class hotel in lovely location. The food was excellent with no problems taking account of our food intolerances. We were well looked after for the whole stay. This iis the third time we have stayed at Gidleigh and we will return soon.

Magnificent, slightly remote hotel.
Lovely place in a quite remote location. Final approach is 2 miles of very narrow twisting road. Once arrived the welcome is second to none and service is first rate. Beautiful hotel with magnificent views provided you have a room situated in the front overlooking the gardens and river. Sadly the weather was quite wet but still managed to do some walking around the extensive grounds between heavy showers. Breakfast was very good and dinner excellent with limited but interesting choices and many additional extras. We recommend this hotel very highly.

Such a charming, magical place!
We had the most magical stay and really got away from it all. In our 10km walk from the hotel we saw two standing stone circles.

Relaxing in comfort.
A beautiful hotel set in lovely gardens on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Friendly, attentive and helpful staff. Very good standard of food. The classic room we stayed in was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Perfect for a relaxing break once you have negotiated the 1.5 mile single track road to the hotel!

The hotel sets a standard for customer service - just excellent in every way. Loved the lounges to rest in, great food and superb rooms. It really was a delight to stay for a few days - and the snow just added to the atmosphere :-)
