We stayed here twice within the past week, breaking up our trip from Devon to the East Midlands and back. Usually we stay at the Premier Inn on the outskirts of the town but that was unavailable so thought we'd try somewhere different. My main concern before we left was the parking, as the Premier Inn has a huge, free, car park. However, on both visits, there were plenty of spaces in the reasonably large car park easily accessible from the road behind. Our room was in the main building of what is a very old Hotel. Creaky and sloping in places and a few stairs to negotiate but, as someone who loves history, absolutely fine. The room itself was lovely, well appointed, quiet and cosy. A bit tired in places after almost 300 years but you expect that. The pool was a big draw with my wife and, although small, was clean and well maintained with extra pool towels provided in the room. There is a small gym, also free to guests. I also cannot fault the staff, who were friendly and helpful. The only issue we had was with the dining. The menu was fairly limited with just a few main courses. Also, on our first visit, two of those mains were unavailable when we sat down to eat at the, relatively, early time of 7.15 pm. Namely, fish and chips and steak. On a limited menu two quite important dishes. We were forced to choose the beef burger which was very good but both felt we'd like to have had more choice. On our return visit it was a Sunday and, again, there was little choice. Just roasts really, which was fine. But, having been serving them for lunch, by the evening some of it was a little over done, the potatoes in particular were quite tough. They also forgot the Yorkshire pudding that was on the menu but, to be fair, did apologise and bring out freshly cooked ones very quickly. The beef and the rest of the vegetables were very good. Breakfasts were good. Nothing spectacular but plenty of choice of hot and cold food. All in all, I can recommend this hotel. The rooms were lovely, the staff nice, the pool good and the price very competitive. The car park costs £5 per day but that is offset by the reasonable room cost for, what are, very nice rooms. The meals we had were fine, just that we'd have liked more choice.
