"One Rude Staff Member Ruined an Otherwise Decent Stay
I stayed at Esplanade Zagreb Hotel with high expectations given its historic prestige, but one employee’s unprofessional behavior significantly tarnished my experience.
Upon arrival, I mistakenly entered the hotel’s parking area as the parking gate opened. After realizing the error, I proceeded to the lobby, completed check-in, and moved my car to the designated drop-off zone for valet service. At this point, a parking attendant aggressively confronted me—hands on hips, speaking in a condescending tone, and demanding how I’d accessed the area. His demeanor was more suited to scolding a trespasser than addressing a paying guest.
To be fair, the front desk and concierge staff were perfectly polite and efficient. Had I not encountered this particular employee, my overall impression would have been positive. But for a hotel branding itself as a luxury establishment, even one hostile interaction is unacceptable. A guest’s entire perception can be undone by a single moment of poor service.
The incident casts doubt on the hotel’s training standards. Why does such a disparity in staff attitudes exist? I hope management addresses this, as no amount of century-old tradition excuses rudeness. Until then, I’d hesitate to return or recommend Esplanade Zagreb without caution."
"The hotel is very close to the city center, about a minute walk from 5-10, so the attractions are very convenient. The staff is also very good at check in and will introduce nearby attractions. The room is very clean, there is a hot water bottle, slippers, hair dryer, etc., but if you live on the first floor, because the breakfast restaurant is also on the first floor, it will be a bit noisy in the morning."
"Staff at the reception are friendly and happy to help. Location is good, only within 10-25 minutes easy walk to different sight seeing places, lower and upper Zagreb, and museums. Train station is around 10 minutes from the hotel. Room is big and have enough spaces for your luggages, and work. However, room temperature could not be adjusted, always at 25-26 degree C, which makes the room quite hot and stuffy. This hotel is a good choice in Zagreb."
"As soon as I arrived, the bespectacled information staff member who greeted me with a bright smile left an impression. Overall, the staff members were all friendly and never lost their smiles~ The best👍 The location is really great^^ The room was spacious and clean, and they cleaned the room once in the middle, and I was impressed again because they cleaned it so neatly and thoroughly♡ Even the breakfast was perfect^^ I stayed comfortably~"
"A friend and I were passing through Zagreb and needed some basic accommodations to stay one night. We figured this hostel might be fine, with a private two bed room being a fairly affordable option. The staff was extremely friendly, and the amenities were good for what one would expect for a hostel. Only issue was that we could barely sleep due to the room being directly on a busy street, we couldn't close the windows due to the extreme heat and their was no AC provided in the room, only a tiny fan. Would recommend this place in a pinch, but if you have the budget definitely better to stay elsewhere."
"Fantastic location. Sauna is available to book for free for private use. The best thing was the massage - it was really good. The only issue was the air condition which was changed to heating during the time we visited (summer transitioning to autumn) so it was a little warm at night. Unless you took the garden facing room, the road/ trams noises will be uncomfortable to leave the windows open through the night. Having said, the staff service were good."
"I recently stayed at the Sheraton in Zagreb and found the experience to be quite average. While the staff were friendly, the accommodations were disappointing, especially for a hotel rated 5 stars—it had more of a 3-star look and feel.
The lack of windows made the rooms feel stuffy, and the carpet was noticeably dirty. The bathroom was small, the TV was outdated and small, and not all channels worked. The rooms overall felt old and in need of renovation, which was a stark contrast to the beautifully renovated front desk area downstairs. The bright, modern lobby clashed with the dark, outdated corridors and old rooms, leaving much to be desired.
I had hoped for better given the brand's reputation. While the service was good, the overall accommodations did not live up to the rating or expectations."
"The hotel is very close to the city center. It is an old hotel. It feels like traveling back in time. The aunt at the front desk explained in detail. The hotel also has free parking. This hotel is very old-fashioned and has a warm feeling. The hotel breakfast service staff are all tall and handsome. I like the hotel's decoration style very much and will stay here again in the future."
"Everything was good except for the fact that the only reason we booked the hotel was because of the outdoor pool on the top floor, since it’s the only one of its kind in Zagreb. Nowhere did it say that the pool would be closed when we made the booking.
What compensation did we receive? Access to a pool at another hotel. The problem was that those pools were indoors. After several complaints and calls to Trip.com, we received 15% of the booking fee back. In my opinion, that was not sufficient, but it is what it is. Everything else was fine."
"The hotel is surrounded by office. Not super convenient to sightseeing location nor restaurants. We booked a room for 2 person but the hotel only have one set of amenities. We arrived earlier then check in time and the receptionist seems abit angry, maybe it is their style of expression."

柳柳純一From Zagreb station, take the tram 2 or 6 and the stop is not painful if you get off at the Zagreb bus station.
This is good if you want to take advantage of the Zagreb bus station. There is no breakfast (you can procure it because there is a 24-hour bakery at the bus station), but you can substitute it because there is a kettle and a pack of tea and coffee and sticks. Instant soup and cup noodles are also good at the supermarket.
Wi-Fi is strong and stress-free.
There is air conditioning so you can deal with the heat of summer or off-season.
The facilities are brand new so you can spend very cozy.
GGuwenqinAfter staying for two days, there was no service, and the bathroom towels in the room were not cleaned at all! When I took my children to the swimming pool, the waiter's attitude was extremely bad. He was only targeting Chinese people. There were a whole room of people in the room. He insisted that we speak loudly and specially recorded a video. Our voices were not ours at all. It was extremely outrageous! It feels a bit ****** towards the Chinese! Not satisfied with the service here! A video of the swimming pool is provided so that everyone can see why we were so noisy. The massage SPA is arranged next to the swimming pool. It is not a bath, so how can there be no sound! When checking in, you can write a clear statement stating that children are not allowed to stay and no sound is allowed while swimming! It's so ridiculous. There was basically no sound from our child in this video. When the waiter came in, he came straight to us and asked us to remind the child to keep it down, but we didn't make any noise at all! Time and time again! This is the worst hotel experience!
Service: Almost no service, no replacement of towels, no cleaning
Health: Not bad
Environment: To be honest, the environment is OK
Facilities: OK
AAnonymous UserExcellent savory breakfast, with cooked and raw vegetables, eggs, meat, cured meats, cheeses, etc. The sweet part is a little lacking.
Free private parking.
Large room.
The shower head cannot be hung on the wall. The sink rests on a shelf that is too deep, which makes it difficult for people who are not tall to use
AAdam.staGreat hostel - got early check in as the room was ready and bathrooms were freshly cleaned. Beds were very clean and common room had a pool table plus other games. Staff were very friendly as well. Kitchen was also very useful to warm up food.
GGuest UserThis room was perfect for my stay in Zagreb. The location is within walking distance of everything you want to see in the city. The room is clean and even has a stove and all kitchen utensils in case you want to eat on some days you’re there. On the last day, we went to the National Park and had nowhere to store our baggage the guy at the front desk held our stuff till 8 pm and worked extra so we could come to pick them up!! Great sat highly recommended!!
GGuest UserThe room (twin bed) is large and clean. The staffs are also very friendly. Althought the food selection during the breakfast is a bit limited, but the taste is quite nice with a comfortable dining environment as well. The hotel location is a bit far from city centre, but there is a tram station nearby the hotel, which is within 2 to 3 minutes walking distance.
AAnonymous UserThe room was ready by 11:00am so I could check in early and leave my luggage. I have a safety concern and it is that the code to access the main door is the same one to your room door, so unless everyone has a different code for both the main door and their room door (which is the same), any of the other residents can basically access your room since everyone shares the same code. The location is very good, very close to the main attractions. At times, there was a strange noise coming from the patio. Overall, decent experience.
TTimThe room was spacious and the receptionist very friendly.
The bath was very moldy, the beds were quite small and the ac couldn’t be controlled.
For a stay of one night its ok and it was the cheapest option for longer stays I would not recommend it.
