We had an absolutely wonderful stay with James and James at Pen y Bryn - I would recommend making this part of your stay for anyone visiting Oamaru. We were welcomed so warmly on arrival, and helped with our bags. They also upgraded our room which was a great bonus. There were delicious freshly made cookies and a great range of drinks waiting in our room. The modern bathroom (with underfloor heating) was huge, and the room felt very luxurious. James was so helpful in telling us where to go to get best views of penguins and lending us his binoculars. In the morning, breakfast was incredible, by far the best breakfast I have had in a hotel. Everything fresh and homemade including granola, jams and honey, followed by a spot on cooked breakfast. The room is also this gorgeous Victorian space. James was great to chat to and both were perfect hosts. Thanks so much for making our stay so special!
We stayed here to experience the old building. One night in the Spa suite and it was wonderful. The bathroom with spa is a lovely, heated room and the bed in the old part was very good. The old lift still works and the sweeping staircase is grand. If you enjoy history then the nostalgia that staying in the old section of the hotel brings is great. The double hung windows still work and let in a wonderful breeze. We arrived on a Sunday night, the restaurant was closed, fortunately opposite the hotel is Fat Sally’s a popular bar and restaurant serving great food. 5 stars for the experience of the old world
Really great find in Oamru, alternative would be a motel or motor lodge as there does not seem to be any international hotels here. The hotel is in a converted building - It was once a bank amongst other things and is very typical of the stunning stone Victorian Buildings that Oamaru has become known for. Centrally located it is only a few minutes walk to the Victorian Quarter, Stem Punk and the blue penguins. Staffed by a really good team, the daily rate includes a continental breakfast which is more than adequate and was a bonus. The rooms are spectacular decorated in themes, The Skiers Room, The Polo Room, The Mountaineers Room, and the walls are decorated in interesting memoriabillia, I had the suite which was very nice and spacious and even though it was one the main road (glimpse of the harbour) the windows are double glazed and it is very peaceful. Would definitely stay here again and happily recommend it. I wish the owners who have developed the property all of the best.
On behalf of my elderly parents who stayed at this establishment for 3 nights just recently. They any I were totally disappointed by the size of the unit. They called it compact but by kiwi standards it's a tiny bedroom with ensuite. The Bed is a double bed not a queen size as advertised. The unit was clean and tidy. Excellent location, being so close to town. But neighbors are McDonald's open 24/7 on one side and a Petrol Station on the other side. A little noisy if your unit is close to these establishments. When my parents after their first night asked for a upgrade to a larger unit .for safely requirements I was totally shocked and appalled to hear of the Managers unprofessional and disrespectful manner towards my elderly parents. I understand that there wasn't any units available, but there was no need to verbally raise your voice to the extent to embarrass them and anyone else in the vicinity. I will not be recommending this Motel to anyone in the future.
We had a great stay at the Alpine Motel. The kitchen studio was perfect for our family- couple and a 2yr old. We had everything we needed. It is dated but very spacious and everything was clean. Enjoyed watching the traffic and people go past from the upstairs outdoor bench seats. This is a great reasonable accommodation option and handy to town - we walked down to the Victorian predinct and harbour/wharf.
The location of the hotel is very good in the center of Oamaru and close to the big supermarket. Our room can accommodate three people. It is a parent-child room with complete facilities including microwave oven, bread machine, refrigerator, etc.
The rules in the store are very strange. After I went there, I used the omelette pan in the morning and brushed it, but the other party put it in the cabinet without drying it and took out all the pans. My suggestion is, if there are Please state the rules in advance. This hotel does not have a dishwasher. We have indeed stayed in so many B&Bs and hotels, and each one has different rules. It is recommended that you make it clear.
Everything else is fine. The location is not far away. There are supermarkets and sports parks nearby. You can go to the beach to listen to the sea, but it is not recommended to go down because it is quite dangerous.
I would like to praise the Chinese restaurant next door, Panda Restaurant, which tastes good and the probability of eating food nearby is relatively low. After playing in New Zealand for a long time, my body cannot stand without eating food.
We were made to feel so welcome. The room was incredibly spacious and spotless. Teas, plunger coffee, hot chocolate and fresh muffins as a welcome; so personal and special. Appreciated that we could drive right up to the door and limit bag movement. The kitchenette allowed us to prepare really well for the next part of our trip. Heated and electric blankets - we had to turn them off after a short time. Out of a large selection of Motels, I suggest you just choose this one and save yourself time.
We had the best service from the team at the Oamaru Motor Lodge. We were coming back from a concert in Dunedin and didn't make it to the accommodation until half past midnight. We had told them this in advance and they had left the room door open for us with the keys inside, with a little note on the table with the wifi password and some kind words. The place is lovely and comfortable, we would definitely come back!
They were amazing. Fitted me in at the last minute after my booking agency double booked me somewhere else. Room was very clean, and had everything I needed. Ground floor also, it was set up for complete disabled occupant and would have fit the bill nicely. Easy parking and a great restaurant on site. 5 stars!
