On the evening of April 17, I reserved a cabana online at Shephard’s Beach Resort in Clearwater, Florida. I arrived with a guest on April 18 at approximately 2 PM and was directed towards the bar to check in for the cabana. I was asked if I would like water and replied yes, not being told that I would be charged $3.25 per bottle. While in the cabana, there were several instances where individuals sitting near and on the pool edge were smoking cigarettes and using e-cigarettes. Multiple employees asked them to stop smoking as there was a non-smoking policy. The individuals continued to smoke and did not attempt to hide their cigarettes. After telling our server, an additional time, I went inside to report the issue to the front desk, told them that I was in the cabana and had to zip the front to try to minimize the smoke, that I had a medical condition which is exacerbated by smoke, and that the people smoking were sitting on the edge of the pool in front of our cabana. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes later, two men came to our cabana, unzipped the front without knocking or indicating to us what they were going to do and accused us of smoking. We explained the situation, reiterated exactly who was smoking and how many times they had been told by staff to stop smoking. One of the men indicated that he was a beverage supervisor and would investigate the situation. He later came back and said that he had told the individuals once again to stop smoking, and that if they were told again, they would be asked to leave. We told him several times that the smokers had been given several chances to stop. He then offered us to drink coupons saying “ I’m not sure if you drink or not”. There was never an apology for accusing us of smoking when we were the ones that reported the issue, and they left without zipping the cabana door which they had unzipped. Instead of fully enjoying the cabana I paid for, I spent time flushing my eyes with water and keeping the door closed until the smokers left(about 4 hours later). One week has passed, I have not received a response from the hotel staff, despite talking to someone when I checked out, and calling to find out how they were going to address the issue. I would not recommend this hotel or their pool facilities to anyone as their actions demonstrated extremely poor customer service and we were treated with rudeness and disrespect. Their actions are unacceptable.
