During my working career I spent several hundred nights in hotels including the Sleep Inn in Walterboro, SC. During my stay at the Sleep Inn I found it to be adequate and convenient to the Interstate. I recommended this hotel to my father-in-law on his drive back from Florida. He ended up spending one night on April 2, 2024. The following day on the drive home he began to experience extensive itching on his back and arms. Once home he looked and saw 3 bites in a row on his back and several on his arms. After several days when the bites continued to bother him and he started to swell up he went to an urgent care facility whose doctor confirmed they were bedbug bites. He also found one on his carpet and evidence of the bugs on his bed dust ruffle. He had indeed brought them into his home. Calls to the Sleep Inn, alerting the staff to this matter were not returned. Similar calls to Choice Hotels Customer Service resulted in them telling us to deal with the hotel directly. After repeated attempts we were able to get thru to the Sleep Inn general manager, Lisa, who denied the existence of bed bugs and said she would send the pest inspection report via email that afternoon. It never came. Called her the next day to ask why we didn’t receive the report and she admitted that she never sent it because she was having the room reinspected and thought we would like to see that report instead. We said that, no, we didn’t want to see a report for the room almost 8 weeks later, we wanted to see the original one. Lisa agreed to email it and once again it never arrived. Made one more call to Lisa only to be told by the desk clerk that she wasn’t available and didn’t know when she would be in. Not only did my father-in-law have to deal with the trauma of bed bugs but spent over $1,500 to have them exterminated from his home. Obviously this experience has left a negative impression on both the Sleep Inn and Choice Hotels.
