My husband and I spent one night at Ishq Colombo at the start of our Sri Lankan honeymoon. The villa itself was stunning – the interior houses a collection of antiques, furniture and artwork from all over the world and the lush garden provides a tranquil oasis away from the bustling Colombo streets outside. The airline lost our luggage so we had no bags on arrival, but the staff were incredibly helpful providing us with toiletries and other essentials and gave us advice on where to buy emergency clothing locally. We had our evening meal in the dining room beneath the enormous chandelier. The food was delicious and the service was first rate. I’m vegan, but that was no problem for the chef who happily provided plant-based options for me at dinner and breakfast. We didn’t make use of the pool, partly because it was raining on and off, but also because another couple were renting the room that opens directly onto the pool, so we felt a little like we would be invading their privacy (and them ours), since the space is so intimate. However, it did provide a beautiful backdrop to our evening drinks in the lounge. Out and about we visited The Gallery Cafe for afternoon cocktails, then we took a walk along enormous banyan-lined streets to Viharamahadevi Park to see the giant golden buddha and watch the flying foxes take off at dusk from the gardens. Overall we had a wonderful stay at Ishq Colombo and our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer.
