Firstly, the drive into the hotel was gorgeous and filled us with excitement and when we drove into the car park and saw the hotel, we were blown away. We entered reception where hospitality sadly slipped. Having had a guest house we are fully aware of the importance of that initial welcome when greeting paying guests, after all they are your lifeblood. We were greeted by a very dour, young, seemingly untrained receptionist. We had had a fair drive from the Isle of Wight but did arrive early at 1pm. We knew there was a surcharge for early check in, but all receptionist could say was "you'll have to come back later". When we suggested we could have coffee in the lounge her response was "what for 2 hours?". Not good customer service. We eventually gave in and paid the £50 to check in. NOTE FOR MANAGEMENT the room was ready, surely a goodwill gesture of a reduction in this fee could be considered especially as we had paid upfront nearly £700 for three day half board stay. We got into our room (number 2), which was lovely, tastefully decorated, overlooking the garden and pond. Very clean with bath and shower over in the ensuite. Generously sized fluffy dressing gowns complimentary toiletries, tea coffee etc (although only two teabags was a bit mean). I went for a long walk around grounds that are impeccably maintained and showed off the beauty of the building. Dinner time came and Sarah, our server, was brilliant. Other reviews have criticised the food, we have no such criticism, the food throughout our 3 day stay was wonderful. I even tried, and got hooked on, salt and pepper squid. Breakfast was part buffet. Cereal, fruit, yogurt, juice. Serve yourself toast. The breakfast menu was ample and extremely tasty. Vegetarians well catered for. The cracks (not for us, we had everything on the menu we wanted), started to show on our last night when our first receptionist looked out of her depth as a server and had to tell guests that quite a few menu items were unavailable. Mind you she was ably assisted by Wilfie, a very pleasant young man who was very helpful. On checkout the wonderful Michelle was amazing (if only she had checked us in). We had queries with our bill (check yours carefully), which this very efficient young lady soon resolved. In summary, this beautiful stunning hotel has been an extremely nice base to see Bath and surrounding areas. Yes, there are flaws which management would be wise to resolve, but on the whole we had a relaxing stay in a beautiful place . Special mention has to go to Michelle, Sarah, Tre and Wilfie. It is apparent that communication between staff needs worked on and I truly believe, given the right management and inhouse training (these kids deserve to be properly trained in hospitality ,it's only fair if they're working with guests), Guyers House, already beautiful, could be absolutely perfect.
