When a hotel has 1315 reviews, 625 of which are 'excellent' and 469 are ' good' - that is 83.2% of the total, one knows pretty much to ignore the adverse comments of the others. Most complainants only make them on this site. They never think to refer their problem to management while they are actually staying. This demonstrates a very weak character and, does nothing but harm to the hotel when people looking for constructive comment, may be turned off. I mentioned that I was having a problem to get heat from the bedroom radiator - It was sorted within minutes, and I had egg on my face. I had to agree with Ffion that it needed a woman's touch! One thing I touched on after our two-night stop was how good the breakfasts were and, in particular, how one rarely gets a meal on a piping hot plate. So, to complain about cold plates or, to suggest, as one has, that Robert in the bar, is anything but friendly, was not only ridiculous, but most unfair. Every member of staff we met was very friendly and helpful. One gentleman manning the bar, in Robert's absence, had a wry sense of humour when he told me I was going the wrong way if seeking to find room 46! Past reviews are worth reading, because most all of them reflect clearly the care and attention given to making The Lion welcoming, comfortable, friendly, and clean. That really sums up this hotel but, what will stay in our minds, apart from those attributes, will be the quality of the food. Luckily, in January, once one is cosy indoors, there is little attraction in venturing out to eat. The Lion menu was restricted at this time of the year, but we both enjoyed the meals we chose. In short, Lion has everything any normal visitor would want as long as they are not expecting The Ritz. We would most definitely more than happy to return - probably during a warmer season.
