The room is super close to the road, I strongly advise against it. It's so noisy at night that it's impossible to sleep. Even putting aside the motorcycles, you can clearly hear the car engine sounds and tire noise from the normal road. This place is definitely not suitable to be a hotel.

All the hotels in Fukuoka city were fully booked and even chain business hotels were expensive, up to about 30,000 yen, so I decided to stay here. The restaurant served French food at night and the food was surprisingly good. The largest room, 301, cost about 150,000 yen for two nights. It felt private and nice.

This is a very high-quality traditional Japanese inn. If you want to experience a different kind of local culture, this is a good choice. The hotel is close to the attractions, the food is of high standard, and the service is impeccable.

The room was converted from an old house, so the comfort level was lacking. The check-in area wasn't in the same room as the main entrance; you had to walk a bit across the street.
The soundproofing in the room was slightly poor.
Although the house was old, the facilities after the renovation were very good. It's very close to Dazaifu, which is very convenient.

It was boring that there was no TV in the room.

We've stayed at a bunch of restored machiya homes and appreciate how these companies are trying to revive and introduce towns of historical importance. Many of these "hotels" are de-centralized and in separate buildings so I feel like the level of concierge-type recommendations and hospitality services diminishes. We were in Baika 301 and after checking in, we parked our car in a lot behind our room. It's a short walk to the main reception area where breakfast is served. VMG mentions that the buildings are old so insulation and lighting may not be up to modern standards. Insulation-wise, it did take great effort to heat up the rooms but the space heater near the futon room was very powerful and worked quickly. The toilet room is way far away from the living area and could use a space heater. The house is near a main street with car noise, but nothing this former NYC resident couldn't handle, and we could hear noises from the room next door too. I was expecting the rooms to be dark and moody from no light but they were surprisingly bright, compared to other restored machiya we've stayed. Breakfast was average +. Tour groups descend on the tiny village by 9am so for a peaceful stroll thru the shrine grounds go earlier. It's an easy town to stroll leisurely thru shrine grounds and shops, cafes. For history/old things nerds there's bunch of castle ruins accesible via car and hiking. The former govt center ruins is flat and a short drive from town.
