I really hoped this was going to be a 5-star review as I wanted somewhere that I could rely on for future visits that isn't a generic chain/budget hotel. On line the The Royal Ship Hotel seemed to fit the bill but things slowly deflated. On arrival first impressions were good. Nice friendly staff, good decor (although all the bedroom doors I saw seem to have been clawed and scratched by something but I put that down to 'patina'), nice bar area and a menu that had enough to offer something different for a couple of nights stay. The first downer became obvious as soon as I was in my room where I needed to log on to the internet and finish some work before the weekend. The Wi-Fi is absolutely terrible. Most of the time I couldn't even find the hotel's server and when it did become visible it either disappeared again before I could log on, froze in use and/or dropped out. It was so bad that I had to leech off wi-fi from a nearby shop but at a distance that was useless too. I asked a staff member if I could change rooms and they just said it was not much good throughout the building. They spoke to the general manager who told them to tell me there was nothing they could do. I beg to differ. There IS something that could be done which is to upgrade the system and provide guests with a service as advertised. Wi-Fi is a given these days and with my work in mind was near top of my list when booking. I can't believe I'm the first to have mentioned this, why have a system that is so bad your staff tell the guests it no good "everywhere"? Long story short, I ended up losing half the next day finding somewhere else with wifi to finish Friday's work before I could even start my weekend. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Bathroom basic but clean with an electric shower that put out very hot water (initially) which began to cool after a couple of minutes. It also ran at low pressure meaning I had to stand uncomfortably close to the wall to get wet, shower and rinse. Might be worthwhile investing in a more powerful unit......... The money for which could be found by selling the shiny, professional, expensive looking barista machine that's down in the restaurant and "doesn't get used for breakfast". Options at that time of the day are either tea or a cafetiere so if like me you enjoy a cappucino or fancy a latte or espresso to kick start your day on the mountain well, tough. You can't have one. And breakfast. Hard boiled poached eggs might be a local delicacy that I've not met before, not a taste I'm likely to acquire. Runny is the way to go. I'd have brought all this up with the staff if anyone had bothered to ask me if I had enjoyed my stay. On leaving I had to wait by the empty Reception desk while the staff member, who clearly saw me and a would-be diner standing there, finished their smoke break. Now I won't deny anyone their scheduled break, especially after a busy breakfast service, (albeit one without the inconvenience of having to
