This is an excellent little hotel-and-pub operation, which offers great value. Rooms are in a separate building close to the pub—a few steps away—and guests need to check in at the pub as there's no reception in the hotel building (but access is very secure, with two doors opened by room cards). We booked the family rooms (as only ones left seemingly), and they were comfortable, spacious, well-equipped, clean and quiet. Beds are fairly hard but VERY comfortable. Bathrooms were clean, shower above bath easy to use, plenty of towels, and flatscreen TVs easy to use. Tea and coffee facilities in room good - with Nescafe Gold coffee sachets for instance. A big plus is the WiFi - no messing with codes, stable signal - just enter your details to log on and you're there. We stayed two nights and we didn't need to even log in again on our return to the hotel for our second night. Truly hassle-free. The food in the pub is good, too. Nothing special but tasty and great value. You can pay for a Continental Breakfast (£6.95ish) or a Classic Cooked (£8.75ish) and we paid for the latter - and it was very good. Eggs how you like them, sausage, great bacon, black pudding, and beans and hash brown and mushrooms. Served quickly, too. The staff are all friendly, upbeat and helpful, too. A special shout-out to Ellie who was in charge at breakfast, and who was really cheerful, efficient and welcoming. I left a bag under our table when I left after breakfast, and she ran after me with it right to almost the door of the hotel - above and beyond, thank you!!! The hotel is convenient for a day trip to York (less than a hour's drive away north) and also is just 30 mins' drive or so from the M1, so if you're heading back down south after a flying visit to York, then it's much a quieter and pleasanter option to staying right on the M1 at a Premier Inn or Travelodge. Finally! Need to note that the pub stops serving food at 9pm weekdays (might be different at weekends). However, there's a McDonalds and KFC within a few steps' walk. Also useful for last-minute stuff is the ALDI, again about a minute's walk from the hotel. Plenty of parking at the hotel, too. Would highly recommend as a budget-friendly and comfortable base for exploring York and surrounds.
