It took me almost an hour (and several trips up and down to the lobby) to finally get into a room because no keys worked for the room I had selected, and I was put in a different room. The room was hardly worth the wait and DEFINITELY not worth the money. There were signs everywhere advising the hotel was undergoing improvements, which it desperately needs; however, there was no sign of any work in progress which would excuse the condition of this property. Tiny dingy bathroom, old bathtub/shower combination, flimsy cloth shower curtain which would not stay in place (causing water to spill onto the floor), bathroom door kept closing, industrial sized shower gel and shampoo bolted to the wall were reminiscent of a gym locker room. Fraying bedspread, cheap pillows, uncomfortable mattress. Mini fridge did not keep beverages cold. Carpet was worn. Decor was hideous. In addition to these niceties, there was an ear splitting buzzer which sounded every 30 minutes the for the entire time I was there. I could never determine the source. There were only 2 bags/ servings for the coffee maker (one of which was decaf). The two minuscule elevators were ridiculously slow, the carpet was filthy, and there was an odd smell. The “amenities” for Honors members was a brown paper bag with 2 bottles of tepid water. The coffee in the lobby was lukewarm. The checkin process was slow because there was one person working the front desk. His name is Denzel ~ he was the only positive in an otherwise negative experience. He was courteous, polite, and efficient to each guest in the very long line of guests waiting to check in. He was very apologetic about the key fiasco and did everything he could to resolve the problem of the key. The price was outrageous. It was graduation weekend for DUKE AND CAROLINA, two major universities within 7 miles of each other. Most of the area hotels were sold out so I suppose the owners/operators of this particular Hampton saw an opportunity to take advantage of those in town for graduation (as was I) who weren’t fortunate enough to get a room at a decent hotel. In my opinion, this property tarnishes the Hilton brand and certainly soured me on the chain. Oh, well. At least the parking was free.
