The Haymarket Lairg Hotel

We for a 3 night stay. First impression - a bit tired looking but ok. Checked in and paid £560 for 3 nights, per room..Got taken back outside and into no.11.....where it all went wrong. Staircase was very dusty and carpet looked rank. Room was ‘ok’ but felt dirty. There was a layer of builders dust on wardrobe, walls and doorways. Bed linen was, however, clean. Windows dirty. We then decided to leave and get a refund. This, unfortunately, was not straightforward. The manager advised he couldn’t get hold of the owner to agree a refund which delayed everything. After an hour he did eventually make contact and agreed to a full refund. I have to say we were offered a thorough clean of the room OR another room but we declined. The damage was done. The bedrooms should not be available until all building work is complete. My advice, check your room before parting with your cash. I’m sure there were nicer rooms, we were just unlucky.

This was a lovely stay, we didn’t expect to be in the underground room that was along the road from the hotel but it was a nice room. In the morning we couldn’t get hold of the hotel as we needed more tea and milk and we were on hold for 7 mins before giving up. Overall the staff were really friendly and we had a very comfy stay

Property had character.

No sympathy for not being able to make our trip due to unforeseen emergency circumstances. We simply wanted to change our dates, not cancel, but were met with a very blunt response denying us any other options. I understand their policies but in the circumstances I’m sure many respectful business would show some decency during these times. Certainly will be avoiding from now on.

Located in Haymarket area of Edinburgh, if travelling by train, get off at Haymarket instead of Edinburgh Waverley as that station is closer and will save you taking a taxi with luggage. It is 20mins walk to Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, so not long. A whole range of restaurants available. Good choice at breakfast, continental and cooked which is available from 7.30am which was very handy as we had a tour to join at 8.30am. Rooms were comfortable. I only had 2 gripes, the noise from other guests when they shut the front door, as it would slam shut. There has to be a solution to this! Second, the bed was very hard, usually I don’t mind a hard mattress but this had no give at all, so beware.

Location is very near to Haymarket station, and there are frequent bus and tram services to the attractions (which are closer to Waverley station). There are some food options around Haymarket station. Rooms are acceptably sized but not extremely big. However, the window in room could not be opened, and the heater wasn't warm enough. The rooms are also not very soundproof, but when I was there there wasn't much noise during sleeping hours so I could still sleep well enough.

Service is very smiling and efficient. Room was large and beautiful. Location of the hotel is 20 minutes walk from center. Parking in Edinburg is complicated but here there are places in the street for one night. Price are correct. We will return here :-)
