Haka Lodge Ponsonby - Hostel

I've been staying in this hostel on and off for a year whenever I go to the city. The facilities are fine and the rooms have been updated quite nicely. However, if you are coming for a short period of time, you barely have any space to be in. The longterms have forgotten it's a hostel and not their own house. There isn't any space available for anyone else in the kitchen or in the living room and sometimes neither in the rooms. The kitchen continuously has plates and dirty cutlery everywhere. The location of the place is very centric and close to many places such as restaurants, the city centre or supermarkets. However, if you stay for a weekend in a room by the road chances are you will hear all the noise. I will say the place has potential if little details are improved.

I have been staying in Haka Lodge in Ponsonby every month or every two months for a year now. The location of the hostel is truly good, right in the centre of Ponsonby and close to many other spots. However, during the weekend, the road can be very noisy from parties and the rooms suffer this. Although the general state of the hostel is clean, it could be said that the cleaners who are long term clients, might have gotten too comfortable in the place as the kitchen, bathrooms and living room sometimes are not that clean. People forget it's not their house to leave cups and dishes everywhere. It can be slightly isolating as well for those who stay short term or for the weekend as there aren't big efforts into including them in the "family". Adding to that, there is barely any space in the kitchen either for dry food or in the fridge due to the long term people.

The apartment has been beautifully decorated and feels homely. Spacious lounge which was perfect for us to host friends for dinner while we were in town, while our baby slept in the bedroom. The bedroom is huge - was more than enough room for our portacot with plenty of room still to spare. Main bed was really comfy - I had a brilliant sleep! Was concerned it might be cold but heaters were provided and worked well. Didn’t really use the kitchen facilities but looked like all the basics were covered. Great communication from staff regarding our late check in - I really appreciated the phone call to check we’d received the email instructions before they left the office for the evening. The only thing this place is lacking is convenient parking.

Really good place, all staff are helpful and welcoming, the place is super clean, quiet, loved that is not a party hostel although everyone seemed to get along, beds are super comfy. Extended my stay because of how good it is.kitchen is spacious and there’s enough of everything, pans, cutlery, dishes, etc.

We had an amazing stay at Haka Ponsonby and we loved the setup of the room with some fancy furnitures, warm and cozy! Amazing location too! Staff were friendly and helpful. Especially the amazing Naomi, lodge manager, who helped us with our booking! Made us felt so special! Will definitely stay with you again! Well done team!

One of my favourite hostels. I stayed in the Ponsonby Haka Lodge for many months for good reason. The hostel has a homie feel, great communal area, its location which is 10 minutes from the supermarket, friendly staff, the powerful showers and the comfortable beds although they are a little squeaky (they are fixing this). The kitchen is a little small yet it makes for a more friendly atmosphere.
