This was a short weekend break for me and my Mum. The hotel was beautiful, if a little old fashioned. There are quite a few stairs from reception into the hotel, but there was a lift after that to get to the rooms. The various public spaces were beautifully furnished with lots of very grand and ornate furnishings. We upgraded to a deluxe room (N.B. The upgrade charge is per night, not for the stay as we thought). Our room was absolutely huge with the feel of a guest room at Downton Abbey! Furnishings again were all old style but really lovely. Beds, however, were truly the most uncomfortable we have ever slept in. Both of us came home with aches and pains everywhere. The restaurant doesn’t open till 6:30 and we were told it was fully booked at that time so had to settle for 6:45. We would have preferred to dine earlier but there was no bar meal option. So we booked for 6:45, and went down expecting to find the dining room bustling. But no, there was only 1 table with 12 guests in the huge dining room. Seems that is deemed as fully booked! Menu sounded really nice but it was very expensive e.g. £23.50 for fish and chips - and it wasn’t that great to be honest. The biggest plus point, as is often the case, were the staff. Particularly the waiters in the bar and in the restaurant.
