We had expected that there would be changes over the forty years since we had stayed at the Peace and Plenty in Exuma and had been made aware through reviews that they were doing remodeling. We were totally unprepared for what we found. We were taken to our room late in the evening as our flight from Nassau was delayed by 3 hours making the trip a 14 hour day. I was too shocked to think about taking pictures. The door faced an unkept area with various construction tools and materials, as we entered the room the biggest cockroach I have ever seen scuttled out from underneath the bed and disappeared into a hole in the molding, the “decor” looked incredibly dated and worse for wear, the toilet ran after flushing and took a while to get it to stop, the toilet itself had some sort of grey, granular material in it that did not dislodge after being flushed and there was an unmistakable odor of mold. The thought of spending a week here was depressing, especially considering the cost of over $300 a night with a $39 “resort” fee that only covered the boat ride to their location on Stocking island. My wife calmly informed the desk person that we could not stay there due to her medical status. We were then given a room in the main building that had just been redone but was lacking furniture or a Television that worked. Unfortunately she was confined to bed after our second day, although I mentioned that to a number of staff, no one offered to help us in any way. Service and housekeeping was spotty, the bartender was great (he immediately turned down the blasting music just outside our room when I explained to him that my wife was sick in bed, took a food order when he noticed we were not being serviced by the restaurant staff and offered to fix some fruit drinks for her) The availability of Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel equipment seemed to be pretty much limited to the guests of the new high end cottages on the island. All in all it was the worst vacation experience of my lifetime (I am 74 years old) including a stay at the hostel next to the bus station in Chetumal Mexico and that was only about $20 a night.
