The hotel’s location is perfect, right in the town centre. It has a private parking building of several levels attached to the hotel. You can access the hotel right from parking lot with your room key. The hotel’s signs can be a little confusing though, so be aware. The room was fine. It was spacious and reasonably clean. The furniture looked quite old though and needed updating. There were only 3 clothes hangers, which was not convenient. But if you are looking for a great location, this is it.

I stayed here 10 years ago and it was good, so I re-booked for this visit. The entire place was filthy and run down. It needs some serious money thrown at it. There was no parking (most sites are allocated to contractors that stay) and the entire garaging area was foul - bins overflowing etc for the entire week of my stay. The room overlooking the river was well sized BUT, whilst plates.cutlery supplied, there was no way to wash these nor were they taken from the room and replaced with fresh ones. No t-towel either and bench tops were not wiped - the room service was the bed sheets pulled up. Balconies need to have some privacy from the adjoining rooms - I really did not want to be listening to the neighbours adventures! My key card would not work on the second night I was there and as it was after 8 pm, I was not game to walk around to the front of the building to gain access, instead waiting for somebody else to drive in so I could gain entry. No real apology for the hoodie wearing receptionist. Classy; not! Won't be staying ever again, total waste of money and a let down whilst I was in town visiting relatives.

Please trust me when I tell you things cannot get worse! If you have ever watch Faulty Towers thinking the show is an over exaggeration of how bad things can get, let me tell you a night at the Emerald Hotel makes Basil's establishment look like the Ritz!

Hotel is run down, abandoned and quite eerie. We came for a weekend in February. Booked it as the photos on the website looked quite nice. These photos must be years and years old because it do not be fooled, it doesn't look like this anymore. Lady on reception was nice, but everything else was average. We must of been upgraded to the suite. The room was huge, it was comfortable enough, had some new carpet (garage carpet) lol, and over looked the pool area. Just the entire hotel had a creepy feeling about it, we didn't see any other guests while we were there, had to walk through a maze to get to the room. The pool looked un-swimmable and has been infested with pigeons and bird poo all over the deck/pool area. Pool wasn't green but had feathers floating all in it so we gave it a skip. Wish we read the reviews before we booked 😂. Looks like the owners have just let it go.

It was a very dilapidated hotel. Very disappointed! Room was dirty, bed was hard, and really easy to get lost and you had to walk a long way around to get to your room Seems that there is a bit of a problem with the pool so don’t expect to swim. But at least the customer service team were good. 1 star rating

Very much regretted staying here. Although the room was clean, the hotel itself was very shabby, with green pool, long empty corridors that were patched and cracked, doors to the garages jammed open so anyone can come and go, and smelled damp and musty. Some staff were friendly but others dismissive of concerns like flooding. Will not be going back.

Okay. Starting with the positives the sheets were clean and the bed was pretty comfortable. Also the view of the river was lovely. The hotel is so run down. The rooms are not clean. They supply some dishes and cutlery with liquid detergent but no cloth or tea towel. They don’t service the room - well they pulled up my bed - didn’t wash dishes or wipe anything. There was a squashed fly in the door frame of the internal door and a huge crack in the ceiling. The courtyard area was totally infested with pigeons. The pool was green and smelly. They were trying to fill the spa section with concrete??! On the third night there was heavy rain and water was pouring through a light fitting. No one answered the phone when I called reception repeatedly. Will not be back!

This used to be, by far, the best hotel in Gisborne. I always demanded this hotel. It is sad to see that it has gone down hill. A nice room but clearly the maintenance people are not being managed. It all looks very tired. It used to look like the photo (left)... not any more !
