Anchor Hotel

The worst hotel we have ever stayed in. We booked because of the Good reviews, however it is under new management now. The electric were dangerous, brown gunge came out of the hot tap. The shower didn't work properly. The bed had 2 mattresses on it but it didn't make it more comfortable we just rolled into each other. I washed the cups and glasses before we used them. The hotel is rundown, dirty, didn't smell too good. There was never any staff about. There was no warm welcome. When we complained we were told the owner was in bed. This was 10am. There are not instructions in the room regarding times for breakfast etc. and not information given as the bar staff showed us to our dingy room. The owner was not around. No evening food is served there, we were told to go to the fish and chip shop opposite. I had emailed prior to arrival asking about an evening meal but got no response. Breakfast was even worse. Many of the fresh products that should have been in a fridge were put out in the night before. The cooked food was in dished under a hot plate that looked as though it had been there several hours. Again there was no staff. When the food ran out it was not replaced. Crockery, cutlery etc. Was dirty. The hotel was fully booked and we didn't meet anyone that was happy staying there. Most said they would complain if they could find anyone to do so!!! Honestly I have only scratched the surface, there is nothing positive that I can say. Please do not book as the website is mis-representative of how the hotel is now.

Called in for a pint, first visit since new owner took over. The place is filthy, run down & smells as bad as it looks. The girl serving behind the bar (serving alcohol), appeared to be no older than 13 years old in my opinion. Also, poles erected for “dancing”?! I drank my pint & left. The fact the “beer garden” was deserted on a beautiful sunny day should’ve told me all I needed to know, prior to going in. I’ll never go back! I feel sorry for anyone who books to stay here, it is certainly not reg of give of our beautiful region. Needs closing down.

we attended a family christening at the hotel this weekend and despite my family having prior communications with the venue about our specific dietary requirements, we were left without a suitable meal. As vegans we were offered egg sandwiches and cheese & cucumber, none of the staff understood what was vegan and we were asked ‘well what do you want then?!’ Eventually given a tub of peanut butter & 4 dry slices of bread. The event had been booked for several weeks prior and at the time of booking clearly advised of our dietary needs.

Just had a lovely night at the Anchor hotel. Really comfy bed and very clean. Loads of character and great views over the courtyard and Haydon Bridge from my room. The hearty breakfast was very much appreciated and the staff, in particular Steve and Angela, were very friendly and helpful.

The staff are friendly and the new GM, Steve is a great host! Lovely breakfast at a historic spot, will definitely be back again when I’m walking through. Great local area too, the hotel has a view of the river which is beautiful. Thank you for your hospitality!

Lovely patio area overlooking the river which was busy music was a bit loud but ok.only one lady serving on the bar and queued for ages to get served.When checking in the lady didn't know how to do it and could not rouse manager who we were told was in bed 4.30 pm.after a while he texted to tell her what to do after finding out one booking was missing we went to room eventually.in room walls were all partially painted with holes and wallpaper hanging off in places.dirty carpet.room dated needs tlc.at 7.30 am fire alarm went off we went outside but no staff around to tell us what to do.then staff member came in car and went in with shopping bags but didn't come back to tell us all was ok.had breakfast was good .lady on bar did her best under pressure on a busy day

Hotel and bar was really nice.. very friendly atmosphere was great
