The review was going to award just three stars, but one member of staff saved it. Mostly, things were fine. My river suite was spacious and comfortable, but it needs updating, as there are no convenient charging points for laptops, etc. (And it was jolly difficult to keep the sleeping area warm.) I was glad the staff were happy to carry luggage as there is no lift, and some rooms require a steep and lengthy ascent. However, the restaurant! First, the chief aim of the manager seemed to be to get me in and out as quickly as possible; there was no sense of being allowed to simply relax and enjoy the evening. Second, the quality of my steak was poor. It was dominated by fat and had barely any flavour - very dull. Finally, the ludicrous dinner, bed and breakfast terms. These terms allow one two courses and a side dish, but do not make clear that almost every dish carries a supplement. For example, of the starters, even the basic onion soup is £2 extra. Worse is to come. In the mains, unless one is prepared to endure chicken, every beef or pork dish carries a minimum supplement of £8 - bonkers! A little calculation shows that the dinner allowance is a miserable £25- on a menu where the average starter is £10. (Indeed, on the night I stayed, I could have saved £17 by having bed and breakfast terms, and buying my dinner separately.) Do not choose dinner, bed and breakfast - it is a scam. Consequently, three stars were going to be given, but one person changed my mind. Whilst waiting to leave, I was looked after by a German receptionist. She was so friendly, enthusiastic and willing to speak openly and normally, rather than in hospitality talk, that I was won over. And she liked steam trains. Hotel du Vin, do not lose her. She turned somewhere lacking human warmth into somewhere I will return to.
