This newly branded Hilton property is a bit of an enigma. So much good, but so much needing improvement. It's too soon to tell in its property redevelopment how far Hilton will restore this grand property. Built as a Hyatt 40 or 50 years ago, the resort was recently converted from a Marriott to a Hilton. We had booked it as a Marriott just a few months ago, using Marriott points, and even with the recent conversion, the reservation was unaffected. In fact, as a Platinum Marriott member, they offered us a free breakfast even though it wasn't really expected. It's almost unfair to review an ocean resort property when only staying one night (we had arrived on the island a day early, and needed a room before our weekly rental down the beach was ready for us). Here are a few thoughts, with good outshining bad. GOOD: Every employee we encountered was friendly and efficient, and really made us glad we were guests - valet (even though I used self-parking which is convenient and only costs $10 / day), bellmen, front desk, bartenders, and dining room staff. What a happy group! The room didn't seem to have been remodeled recently, but the bathroom seemed brand new and very clean and modern. Towels were especially fluffy, and the King bed and pillows were noticibly especially comfortable. The selections at the breakfast buffet were incredibly fresh, delicious and well-presented. One of the best breakfast buffets I have ever encountered for a mid-priced hotel/resort. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: Common areas, especially out by the pools, needs much more constant attention. Dirty end of day when we arrived; dirty the next morning. The indoor pool was closed. We realize that can happen, but we were told it was a chemical balancing issue rather than a mechanical or structural issue, so I'd say more management attention is needed. I bring this up because the outdoor pools apparently aren't heated, and it was a little early in the season to go plunging in to the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel overall needs a major remodel. It looked to me like Hilton slapped their name on the wall and just kept operating. This property has great potential. Namesake island, prime beachfront location, and all sorts of built in amenities. It'll be interesting to see what this Hilton looks and feels like a couple of years from now.
