Peaceful, tranquil location by the river Tyne. My last stay in the hotel was about 35 years ago and little would appear to have changed still very pleasant but a little faded by todays glittery standards. Good room rates.

Very friendly easy check in. Really nice hotel On the riverside ideal for a quiet relaxing getaway. The room was nice clean slightly small for a long stay but had everything for a comfortable stay. I will defiantly visit and stay again soon..

I had booked a night in the George Hotel June 1st for my husbands birthday. We found the location beautiful and the garden next to the river very relaxing. Some of the staff provided very good customer service. Sadly, that's as far as the good experience went . The first thing we noticed was cello tape holding the wallpaper on in the corridor leading to out room. Our room was found to have mould in the bathroom and in corners of the bedroom. The walls were dirty and had squashed insect bodies everywhere. It clearly hadn't been decorated in many years. We decided to use the "leisure centre". The code we were given did not allow us to enter so a customer eventually let us in. Just to find out we needed a pound for the locker. So had to go back to get money, again we couldn't get in so had to head back to reception. To be told to use the staff code if we wanted to use the pool again. The changing rooms turned out to be disgustingly dirty, most of the lockers were broken and the pole had mould all around the top of the pool area. Needless to say, we did not use the leisure centre twice during our stay. In the evening we decided to have fish and ships of the very poor menu choice. These turned out to be very grease and so we left them. The starter and pudding were just about addable. We were then presented with a bill Of £71 which had to be paid immediately rather than at point of checking out (do we not trust our customers?). We were seated next to the window in the restaurant overlocking the river. Which would have been lovely if it had not been for the cobwebs and the bluebottles fighting for the their lives in the window. On checking out we were informed , that if he had told reception the night before we would have been given an upgraded room. To say the least I was bitterly disappointed having selected the George Hotel for my husbands birthday surprise.

The first thing I'll say was, we were a party of 25 people. So, never easy. But the staff coped well. My only gripe really is that they were obsessed with payment. It became a bit of a joke.... even though stuff was on a tab.. they were obsessed with getting you to buy the drinks before they even started pouring. I actually thought the whole weekend needed some form of manager just getting a grip of everything... reception just said "I'll text the owner" every time. The good bits, rooms are ok, lots of pafking, stunning location and food was adequate (exvept the breakfast sausages which were vile) - but they gave us a great weekend. I'd go back just for the view of that bridge.

Lovely welcome from receptionist on arrival. Room 219 needs smartening up in particular the shower room, bedroom a bit bare and radiator doesn’t work and room was cold as was the corridor although main hotel warm. Restaurant ok and food nice but awful cheap choice of wine by the glass - e.g. Chilean white ugh! Annoying policy of having to pay at the bar for meal and drinks and unable to put bill on the room for check out. I had to tell Barman we were residents and £25pp for dinner needed to come off the bill. All staff very pleasant.

The George sits right on the Hadrian's Wall pathway, so if trekking the wall it is an ideal overnight stop. The hotel seems to be in the throws of a makeover - outside painting, and some areas inside seemed recently refurbished. Other areas of the hotel are a little dated but nevertheless the hotel is well positioned, clean and has some very positive good points: it has a pool/spa/gym (but you need to take a towel with you from your room), the restaurant overlooks the river (as does the garden area) with lovely views. Menu was varied and all we ate was tasty. Overall, food, drink and accommodation was good value, especially considering location.

On arrival to check in we were ‘greeted’ by a rather cold and miserable old lady who didn’t have any hospitality skills which put a dampener on our first impressions. Once we found our room we were pleased with the river view and cleanliness. Beds were comfy too. We took advantage of the pool facilities which unfortunately were pretty grim. The tunnel through to the leisure centre has an overwhelming stench of damp. The pool itself was mouldy around the seals and the floors look like they’ve never been cleaned. The cleanliness of the changing rooms was so bad I ran back to the room in my costume and towel to have a shower and change. Breakfast was overpriced for what was on offer and covered in oil. Staff were oblivious to decent hospitality skills and out or their depth with demand of breakfast customers. Would not stay here again and would not recommend.

The staff are friendly, food through the day is fabulous and a good price it’s overlooked by locals but we are locals and we love it !! Also enjoy the swimming pool very quiet and relaxing I have nothing bad to say about the place, looking forward to summer drinks by the river!
