Skala Sunset Hotel and Spa

My mother arrived here for a short break and we were overwhelmed from the moment we stepped off the ferry from Mykonos (around a 2 hour journey €100 return business class) Kyriakos, the owner was there waiting for us and took us on the short journey to the hotel in a minibus wearing a mask so felt Covid safe. When we arrived, the hotel is on a hill so had the most spectacular view! I would go as far as to say it would rival the views of Santorini although this was in the view anyway!! The buildings are the glorious white washed and blue painted you would expect to see in traditional Greek villages and with the beautiful pink flowers all over. We had beautiful wilderness behind us and sometimes visited by the couple of nearby horses. The room was larger than expected, a large double bed and single bed with very comfortable memory foam mattresses, clean bedding and extra blankets if required. The bathroom was very plush by all standards with Skala branded soaps. The swimming pool- my goodness! We had the whole plane to ourselves as we were the last guests of the season but you can imagine when the pool bar is open and all the greek nights going on, would be great fun. However, we had the loungers and four posters to ourselves and felt very VIP! Breakfast was included and we ate at the nearby Mills restaurant run by the family. All wearing masks for service, food from grill and more traditional (you must try the rabbit stifado!) and very reasonable with free local honey and cinnamon raki and complimentary mini ice creams. The hospitality and warmth shown by this family is second to none and we will be booking for next year. We might even have time for some spa time, also provided. It is on a hill, so heels not recommended. The town has lots to do and was still relatively busy. From start to finish, perfect. Efharisto poli!

The first night was very nice. We were allowed to check in early and had a beautiful room with a beautiful view. The room number was 26. First night was perfect, the room was clean and everything was great, the air conditioning unit worked beautifully. On the second night, we arrived to our room at 4:30 AM, exhausted, to find our bedroom infested with ants. Not a few ants on the floor, but everywhereeee on our bed and on and under our pillows 🤢. I would understand if we had open food in our room, but we did not. We called reception and someone came to see our room and saw how bad it was (you could see the look of despair on his face) and changed us to room 15. Upon going into that room, there were ants everywhere on the floor. We had to make the decision: sleep in a bed infested with ants, or sleep in a room with ants on the floor as there was apparently no other clean rooms available (which is very surprising as it was low season and most of the rooms were empty (facts as we could see at the reception which rooms were available and which rooms weren’t since you could see the keys)) We had no choice but to take the room with ants on the floor, air conditioning barely worked, stains on the bed and garbage from the previous person. It was not fun waking up in the morning with ants on our arms, especially when I hate and am absolutely disgusted with ants. At 10am we were told a new room would be ready for us and that we would have an upgraded and better room. We got room 5, which yes was beautiful and yes was an upgrade from room 15, but not an upgrade from room 26, as it was the same room, and the air conditioning was not working well. Unfortunately, the service and cleanliness declined throughout our stay. I have reached out to the hotel numerous times and keep getting ignored. It’s been 2 weeks and am still waiting for the hotel to respond back. As someone who has worked in the hotel industry for 5 years, never have we EVER ignored a client, especially when they’ve had a bad experience. Between that and Georgina’s passive-aggressive attitude, we are beyond disappointed. This is such a shame as day 1 was fabulous. Also, if you wake up passed 9AM, expect to have no breakfast. Definitely great views, but if you experience anything bad, you won’t get it resolved. Hoping to hear from the hotel at some point…

I must confess that I was a little worried after reading some recent bad reviews about the hotel, but I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, the view and location The view from the hotel is wonderful, and the location is perfect, just a few steps from Mylopotas Beach. Also, the bus stop is a few steps from the hotel and costs €1.60 to go to the center of Chora. The breakfast was excellent too. The staff were friendly and helpful. Room cleaning took place every day. The hotel offers a transfer service from Porto for €5 per person each way. Some places in the hotel really smelled like sewage, but that didn't lower my rating. I know it's disruptive, but it's a hotel in the middle of an island, in the middle of the Mediterranean. I don't know if there's much they can do in terms of maintenance, you know? Take note that the hotel (and surrounding area) has a lot of cats. I know it's easy for me to say since I'm a cat lover, but cats just need love and food. If you can, it costs less than €3 for a pack of cat food on the market. Help the kittens. I'm giving one less star just because of the restaurant. We had a problem with the order, which was wrong, but they apologized. But it is also an extremely expensive risotto dish with very little portion of food. You will find much better options at restaurants on the beach and in the center of Chora.
