The Royal Hotel

We stayed here for one night on our way to Kelso races and we were very pleasantly surprised by our experience. Alex is a top man, very cheerful, informative and helpful and made the stay very special. The room was just what we needed and the breakfast in the morning was cooked beautifully cooked. Great place to stay at a very reasonable price.

We had a lovely stay, the room was very spacious and extremely well maintained.

Lovely helpful staff-very clean and reasonably priced

Room was fine, shampoo and soap were unbranded liquids in bottles attached to the wall. Big bed. Warm room. (Room 4); other family members stayed in Room 1. Bed was comfortable. Stripes on the wall of the bedroom were a little overpowering. Breakfast was pretty good the next day; the hosts were delightful.

Great bed and breakfast. If you are looking a B&B with large rooms large shower great bed . Look no further Rooms were clean and a good breakfast which is ordered the night before. Alex is a very good host

When they say 3 PM check-in, they mean it. It would be nice to have something on the door stating hours of operation. We arrived before 3 and the place was locked up tight. There was no indication that it was open for business, just momentarily closed for lunch or whatever. It appeared to be closed permanently. The on-line information mentions parking. It is there, but it isn't necessarily at the hotel. It can be found for free, thankfully. It is an old structure and shows it. There seems to be a very strong concentration of mold and mildew. My wife could smell it very easily, and had trouble sleeping due to this odor. Turning on the shower in the morning was interesting. Who knew you had to turn on a switch outside the bathroom to start the water? Nothing indicated anywhere. I just guessed and got lucky. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the Royal. I really want to, because it's obvious this area needs the influx of tourism money, the amenities need upgrading before they'll get too many customers. Mostly, better information would go a long way to helping out visitors.

I stayed here after my first day of walking St Cuthbert’s Way. My feet were tired and I was looking to relax and give them a break. Alex greeted me and had already taken my suitcase up to my room (very grateful for that!). Good sized room, great water pressure in the shower. Located very close to the abbey and other amenities.

Pleasure to stay in this lovely historic building on the borders. The Host was so welcoming and the staff could not have been any more helpful. The rooms were clean and beds so comfortable. The breakfast was fantastic including smoked salmon and haggis which was delicious. Couldnt have asked for more.
