Having stayed at Hanalei Bay Resort 8 years ago; we decided to return as we loved it so! We arrived on Kauai a few days prior to check in at HBR, so at 9 am on check in day, called to inquire of the possibility of early check in. We were told “the people staying in your room haven’t checked out yet, but will be out by 10. I will inform house keeping you are already on island to try and get you in early.” With that in mind, we left the beautiful, clean and modern Kauai Lagoons at 11 and took our time purchasing groceries, stopping at Lydgate Beach to eat sushi and driving the meandering road to North Shore while taking in the beauty of the beaches we passed. We arrived at 2; and were told they would inform housekeeping we were here so the room could be cleaned sooner…but wasn’t this already noted? We were instructed to park the car in lot B/C, and I inquired which building we were in so we could park closer to the building. I received “No, I will not tell you which building you are in, you can move your car later.” Checked back at 3:20 and were told the room was clean and just needed to be inspected, and the front desk agent was going to ask the manager if that could be done. She promptly returned and said “You will receive your room at 4 and not until then,” although other people could be seen checking in early, so mine was not an odd request. We returned to the desk at 4, were given keys and told to go wait by our car for a golf cart/bellman to collect our luggage and show us to the building. I inquired “now? He will be coming now?” I was assured he would be right there. After 20 minutes of standing next to the car in the drizzling weather, with luggage and a weeks worth of groceries, I returned to the front desk to inquire when the person was coming. “Right now, I was assured.” We were finally driven down a muddy path, and rest assured, while some units have a stunning view of Bali Hai in the distance and spectacular sunsets over the ocean, some units are located in a gully, overlooking greenery, a golf cart parking lot, the back of the tennis court office but NO view of the mountains, waterfalls or oceans. Tennis Courts: We choose HBR, from previous experience as well as the many tennis /pickleball courts advertised. I read a previous review, where a previous guest was denied access to the courts, which I should have paid more heed to. We brought our pickleball paddles, specifically to engage the teenagers with us, in an evening rally. We asked concierge if we could use the lower 2 courts for PB. We were told “you may use the courts after 5:30, but pickleball needs to be finished by 5. You can also ask the tennis pro if she has court availability. We ask the tennis pro if we can use the lower court for PB, and she looks aghast and declares “NO!” But of course, we can rent racquets for $20 per person per day and play tennis in the evenings. During the stay, another family shared that they also tried to use the tennis courts and sent the
