We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Phillips! Something to note is that reservations are required for the speakeasy, and the reservation we made here did NOT include breakfast or the valet service which is necessary due to the location. Everything in the room was clean except for the shower curtain, which is why I rated the cleanliness as 4 rather than 5. Overall the hotel has a ton of charm and friendly helpful staff!

The 24-hour community gym that used to be just a block away is no longer available... and the hotel's own gym is too small due to the limitations of the old building!

The hotel I booked with Ctrip gave me a very bad room. I have found that people who book with Ctrip usually get very bad rooms. The hotel is old and run down.

The Hotel Phillips certainly makes a striking first impression. Stepping into the lobby, you are immediately met with an undeniable historic charm and a sense of grandeur that harkens back to Kansas City’s Art Deco era. The staff are well-versed in the building's history, sharing intriguing stories behind various rooms that add a unique narrative layer to the stay. Additionally, the on-site speakeasy is a standout feature, offering a well-executed atmosphere and high-quality cocktails that capture the "hidden gem" vibe perfectly. One of the property's strongest assets is its premier location. Situated in the heart of downtown, the hotel offers excellent walkability. Being able to step out the front door and easily walk to a variety of breakfast spots and dinner destinations is a significant plus for any traveler. Unfortunately, the aesthetic appeal and prime location do not translate into a comfortable guest experience. The most significant issue was the quality of the sleep environment. The beds were remarkably uncomfortable, leading to a very poor night's rest. For a hotel of this stature, a baseline level of mattress quality and comfort is expected, and this fell well below that mark. Furthermore, the logistical experience was inconsistent. When requesting a mini-fridge for the room, it was clear that the equipment quality varies wildly; colleagues in my group received vastly different models, ranging from standard to substandard. The most concerning aspect of the stay, however, was the condition of the bathroom. It was in clear need of a renovation. Not only was it dated, but the tiles were visibly chipped and cracked. While the Hotel Phillips excels in atmosphere, history, and location, the lack of basic comfort and the presence of maintenance safety risks make it difficult to recommend for a restful stay until room updates are prioritized.

I stayed in this gem of a hotel during the World Cup group match between Ecuador and Curaçao, and I couldn't have been happier with my choice. The art deco theme makes the hotel unique -- you really feel like you're in the thick of historic Kansas City, home to jazz clubs, speakeasies, and Union Station, symbols of the Gilded Age. The hotel bar is, quite literally, named "The Speakeasy" and offers a panoply of 1920s-themed cocktails. There's also an attached Italian restaurant (didn't try it) and omakase sushi restaurant, which offers creative, high-end sushi. I loved the snow crab nigiri, which featured smoke snow crab with a dash of white pepper. (Another pro tip: try the lunch menu, which offers chirashi don at a very reasonable price.) If you're concerned that this is an "old" hotel that will offer antiquated fixtures or what not, don't be: all rooms have been remodeled in a period-appropriate way, but the water pressure is strong, the wi-fi works, and the beds are very comfortable. The reception/concierge is also very knowledgeable about Kansas City venues. The central location also can't be beat; it's one block away from the free downtown streetcar (i.e., light rail) that takes you anywhere on Main Street. You can easily get to the famous Green Lady Lounge and Blue Dolphin Jazz Club, or the WWI Museum, or the City Market District by streetcar and foot within ten minutes or so

I had the pleasure of hosting a Pride event over the weekend at Hotel Phillips! It was such an amazing experience on many levels! The staff was incredibly accommodating and fun! From Edmund and Irma who assisted with the planning and logistics to Adam, April and Jordan who assisted with Food and Beverage- They ALL were AMAZING in their own way and true experts in what they do. April put out the most AMAZING BUFFET! The food was so fabulous and I am still getting compliments from our guests on how much they enjoyed it. (We need recipes!) But I have to say it was April and her excitement and love of what she does that made a lasting impression on us. She is special and I am so grateful for her expertise for this event! The cocktails were perfection. Jordan came up with the most inventive signature cocktails for the event that the crowd loved! The espresso martini was a HIT! Adam checking in with me and making sure the guests we happy and that amazing personality made all the difference. All of that wrapped up in the beauty of this historic gem of a hotel! They are true pros at what they do. Thank you Hotel Phillips for caring about our community and not only allowing us to host a Pride event but also be so excited about it. It means more than you know. You owe it to yourself to stay at this hotel, enjoy the restaurants and architecture and make your way down to P.S. the speakeasy with the most amazing atmosphere! Bravo Hotel Phillips P.S. Many of us stayed at the hotel for the night and the rooms are charming (Great Product and water pressure. Plenty of hangers are available!) and breakfast was perfect!

I had a great stay! The staff treated my friends and me exceptionally well from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, the valet staff was friendly and welcoming, which made a great first impression. One of the valet attendants, Michael, I believe, even took the time to give us directions and recommend places to visit.
