Cozy heritage hotel full of beautiful view and history. Friendly staff and good service. Great breakfast. Wonderful experience.

We have stayed there before and enjoyed staying in a period property and breakfast was very good. This time alas there was no hot water for bath/shower in our room in the morning and the breakfast menu was more limited than last time. So, unfortunately this was not the best experience for us - but bed was very comfortable and we slept well.

Entered the room to find the hot tap on full blast, flooding the bathroom floor. Food was average at best; dirty cutlery, amateur service, despite steep prices. Morning shower was a blast of water which it would be generous to describe as tepid. Rooms are not at all soundproofed. But at least there's a nice big tv to distract yourself with.

Stunning grounds but everything else so disappointing. A poor welcome on arrival. No one on reception. My husband went to find someone. But then we had to wait whilst she carried a table to another room before seeing to us. The staff need some training on customer service. We like a nice warm friendly welcome but we didnt feel that. The grounds and building are stunning but this doesnt continue Into the rooms. Our room was not good. Stained carpet, tired and tatty. Our bathroom was gross... mould (could get rid of that so easily!) Flaking paint, broken loo roll holder, big chip out of the loo cistern. Things that could easily be put right. Service was ok but not great at dinner, and very limited option... we were told there was no steak left which is poor planning so only a (very small) plaice for me and pork for my husband. We ordered a side of seasonal veg which was literally just kale (or some sort of greens) which was already on our plate with our dishes anyway but the waitress didnt say anything... we were expecting something other than more of what we already had! The food at dinner was ok but breakfast was terrible. Only a buffet option. The worst tough, bland, cheap quality sausages, no pastries and cook youself toast. Awful. On checkout i mentioned the poor state of the bathroom but the receptionist didnt seem bothered and i feel my sensitively delivered constructive critisism fell on deaf ears. So to sum up... ten out of ten for the ground staff/ gardeners... front of house team need to be much more 'on it' and friendly... nothing should be too much trouble, the bar needs better staffing as the staff were hardly in there, the chef needs to forward plan and order better... breakfast needs a total rethink and those sausages need to be discontinued, maintainence and housekeeping need to deep clean the rooms, carpets, bathrooms... but the bedding was beautifully clean. Such a shame as all this is so easy to put right. Training needed.

Charming hotel with beautiful grounds. For an old house, it was immaculately presented & clean. All staff that we encountered were friendly, polite & helpful . We had dinner & breakfast both of which were well presented & tasty although the wines were in short supply & the available ones were overpriced. The bar area was comfortable & relaxing although we had to wait for staff to appear to serve us. Bed linen & towels were good quality, beds & pillows incredibly comfortable. Only major complaint was that the shower was barely warm.

Bedroom and bathroom were quaintly good although both could have been improved by a lick of paint. However, the food was not only very expensive but served luke warm and generally of ordinary quality. The coffee was so strong that it was undrinkable [ a Frenchman would quake at it ! ].

The location is idyllic. And the place itself is OK to stay in. On the plus side. My room was quiet. No noisy neighbour sounds through paper thin walls. A real plus. Tea and coffee selection in room very good (proper coffee bags). Room small but it was a single occupancy. Downside was very hit and miss breakfast - got menu breakfast one morning; buffet style the next with no fruit or yoghurt. Inexperienced staff at times. But all doing the best they could. Despite all that would stay again as location is so pretty.

I would not recommend a stay at this hotel. The first impression on driving in was positive, beautiful gardens and surroundings. Unfortunately on entering the hotel the greeting from the receptionist was none existent and unwelcoming. She barely indicated where our room was before turning and staring at her computer screen. We found our room to be rather scruffy, with heavily stained carpets and seats. However the bed linen was clean. The bathroom had flaking paint and mould on the skirting boards. We decided to cancel our dinner reservation and eat in the town instead. Our breakfast experience was equally poor. We were shown where we could sit by a surly member of staff, no eye contact or even a ' good morning.' We ordered a vegetarian breakfast, but he came back five minutes later to say they had no veggie sausages. We definitely would not stay here again. It is a shame that this lovely building is in a very run down condition and that the staff have no training in welcoming clients, and have very poor hospitality skills.
