Protea Hotel Klerksdorp was built in 1995, renovated in 2014, and offers 91 rooms over 2 floors, restaurant & conference rooms, and a charming garden. Furnishings and decoration provide a business atmosphere. Service is friendly. Secure parking and stable WiFi. Our room had desk & chair, tea facility & fridge, wardrobe & safe, club-chair & TV, airco & terrace with table & chairs, and a good kingsize bed. We had a separate bathroom with washbasin, toilet, and shower over the bath. All was clean. There is a good buffet breakfast: eggs made to order, cold cuts & cheeses, breads & toast, cereals & fruits, milk & yoghurts, juices & preserves, rolls & croissants, tea & coffee (Italian coffee machine). Protea Hotel Klerksdorp is a comfortable hotel and we had a good stay. Recommended.

So I do not usually write more than one review for the same place, last year April I was there and I did not like it one bit. However, this month I went back because my company could not book me anywhere else and I must say it has improved a lot like a lot. I do not know if it is under a new management or what but the staff is more friendlier and helpful - you must know that when a staff is willing to assist even on their way out because their shift is over that they care. I mean i was walking from my car with luggage and a staff member with her hand bag (clearly on her way home) stopped and turned back to assist me with my luggage until the porter the potter came through - that was like "wow", everyone was genuinely friendly and helpful one can sense they are all working towards a common goal to take care of the customer. Oh and the premises got an upgrade to i.e. the bathrooms have been repainted and tiled. Big ups for the improvements - huge difference from last year April.

Check-in is usually quick at Marriott group hotels, but this was not the case here. The gentleman at the desk took ages to assist us (with no other guests around) and came across as fed up, almost like we were interrupting him. We asked for a late check-out as Marriott elite members, and he said "ok," but never actually noted it. The next morning housekeeping said we need to check out despite booking the late check out, and then reception confirmed that no late check-out had been recorded. This lack of attention left us disappointed. The gentleman was rude, dismissive and unattentive. The room itself was a decent size, with comfortable beds and pillows, though the bathroom was very small and the overall look of the room felt dated. The light from the passageway also shines through the door at night, which was disturbing. The shower leaked quite a lot, and to top it off, the TV didn’t work properly.. The channels were all shaky. In 2025, this really shouldn’t still be an issue at a hotel under the Marriott/Protea name. On the plus side, the grounds are neat and clean, and my children enjoyed a swim in the cute, well-kept pool area. Unfortunately, when we came back to shower, there was no hot water. Reception simply told us to use another room, which felt very inconvenient, especially with kids. A couple of other details stood out: We were not given the WiFi passcode on check-in and had to go back to ask for it. The welcome fruit platter was a nice gesture, but it came mixed with biltong. This made it unsuitable for us as vegetarian/halal eaters, which could have been avoided with a little more thought. Overall, the hotel has potential — the property is clean and not badly maintained — but the service we received left a bitter taste. If you do stay, I recommend asking for the bigger, more updated rooms at the end of the hotel (room numbers 301 and up). I hope management takes note, because this could easily be a much better stay with a few fixes.

Nice and well maintained old facility in the quiet town of klerksdorp. Pleasant reception team and check in. Neat rooms. Go for the rooms with showers, not bath tubs. Safe parking and hotel generally a safe facility with a nice small garden sitting are. Breakfast simple but complete. Lunch and Dinner try the restaurants at the malls. Okay hotel for short stay. Amazing staff.

Protea Hotel Klerksdorp (Barend Street) - horrific experience. Made prior arrangements to check in at 10pm.Reception was jam packed with late arrivals, only one very rude gentleman assisting with check in. It took us another hour to check in. The gentlemen attending to the check in used foul language and everything at reception was "disfunctional" and it was chaos. Although we have booked and paid in advance, he refuses to assist us if we don't pay again, because apparently the confirmation does not reflect on his side. We paid (again) just to get to the room at 11h45 pm. The next morning the same guy phoned us 6am and requested us how we intend paying for the accommodation (What!!). The room was filthy and definitely not a non-smoking room. The floors were so dirty (rather kept our socks on). Reception was dirty and the manager on duty indicated that she is going to her real job in the kitchen and cannot assist anyone (I gather she was the kitchen manager and not a general manager). The door handles in the shower were missing. I cannot believe the person who did the grading for the tourism board gave this place more than one star - shame on them. This is also definitely not a safe area to arrive late night.

Hard pass I recently stayed at Protea Klerksdorp with my kids, and sadly, our experience was far from satisfactory. While the hotel grounds were well-maintained and visually appealing, the issues with cleanliness and service overshadowed this positive aspect. Our room was not cleaned thoroughly—makeup brushes from previous guests were still on the floor. This made me question the overall hygiene of the space. Our biggest challenge was the noise. Other guests held a loud party directly in front of our room until 2:30 AM, and despite the disturbance, there was no staff intervention to address it. It made for a sleepless and stressful night, especially with kids. The restaurant experience was equally frustrating. We ordered a Hawaiian pizza for the kids, but what arrived was chicken with chili sauce. When I questioned the staff, they claimed they had added pineapple to the dish to make it "Hawaiian." Such a response was not only unhelpful but also dismissive of the mistake. The food quality overall was subpar and disappointing. While the well-kept grounds showed potential, the lack of proper housekeeping, disregard for guest comfort, and unacceptable dining experience make it impossible for me to recommend this hotel to families or anyone seeking a relaxing stay.

Great service on arrival from Jeandre at reception, very helpful and friendly gentleman. Rethabile was a darling in the Restaurant. This morning I called reception to ask for an iron, and literally in 45seconds there was a knock at the door by a gentleman with a big smile on his face. This is a Happy place.
