We really wanted to like this newest addition to the Habita Group’s Impressive portfolio of Boutique Hotels. La Paz seemed like a curious destination with natural beauty and ecological interest. And Baja Club has gotten press in every travel, design, architecture, fashion, you-name-it, magazine / blog this year. Upon check in we were disappointed to learn that we were allocated a low floor Junior Suite, despite having made the reservation 6 months ago. The room was a generous size but was located above the housekeeping maintenance quarters and just over the parking spots along the Malecon or seaside promenade…a bit noisy. Consequently we never used our balcony. Lighting in the room was minimal…or I should say dark. Insufficient for shaving in the bathroom or for a woman to put on make up. The room was attractive but impractical with constant condensation on the floor of the WC for some reason. This hotel knows how to charge some serious prices. It was High Season, New Year’s Eve week and room rates are over 550.00 USD per night. I believe I actually paid a lower rate since I booked so far in advance. For these rates the quality and service do not match. Housekeeping is totally inconsistent, forgetting to refill the complementary water carafe every day, replace dirty towels, freshen up the room in basic ways one would expect at a luxury hotel…fold clothes, tidy up the space etc. There should be a protocol in place to help them remember what to do. The male evening receptionist was a complete disaster, rude to guests, ignored the phone, on both our 2d night and our 5th night, required in person visits to the lobby for requests and even then was inappropriate in his demeanor. Wait staff were well meaning and sweet but too few in number for the ratio to guests. The concierge Marianna is excellent…helpful, responsive, informative, polite, professional and cheerful…could not be better. Also Paola The Front desk manager was very competent and professional. The NYE gala dinner had an ambitious menu nicely conceived with dietary restrictions graciously accommodated for. Unfortunately however the dishes were poorly executed and not very tasty. The rooftop celebration was nicely organized. In summary the PR machine went into over drive on this hotel. It is not ready for Prime Time…or perhaps just overwhelmed at being filled with guests. If you are going to charge real prices then deliver real quality. Moreover La Paz is still a bit of a back water town with a few interesting excursions. Guests are coming for the hotel not for La Paz. Best to not believe the hype and let a new property get up and running a few seasons before you visit. Lesson Learned.
